The Empire historical timeline is quite long and filled with a large number of perhaps boring bits of detail. Nevertheless, it is possibly useful and perhaps historically important to maintain an archive of historical dates in Empire history. It is with this in mind that the list below is maintained.
This is a work in progress, and will never be complete, in that history is always being made, even if obscure. The list below is a superset of the timeline shown on the history page.

1970's:
- 1972-1974: Peter S. Langston writes the first Empire program at Evergreen State College (source). Ben Norton, Chuck Douglas, Mike Rainwater and several others contribute (source - look for "HP Empire", local copy). Peter never released source code to this version.
- 1976: According to "version" command from 1989, "Empire (c) 1976 by Peter Langston; accept no substitutes!"
- 1978: "PSL Empire" runs on the PDP 11/70 (source - look for "Old Empire", local copy).
- Ken Dowers (University of Oklahoma) ports the code to run on a Vax 11/780 under VMS. Weather existed in this version (source, local copy).
1980's
- July 30, 1981: Peter Langston describes Empire as a "mildly consuming simulation game" (source, local copy). This is also the oldest mention of Empire in the groups.google.com archive.
- October 10, 1981: Peter Langston intends to convert Empire to a hex based system (source, local copy).
- 1982: Jim Simons (a.k.a. 1/2 of Escher), a future head of Empire, begins play. This is based on e-mail conversation with Jim: "Well, my first game would have been around 1982 at Purdue... I think I played Little Italy.. built a real nice country, then got rolled by the "late break" exploit. (When you didn't break from your sanctuary, your population would still increase. So you waited until you had 999 civs, broke, recuited them to mil, and started rolling... at that time there were no units, a sector didn't lose mobility when conquerded, and you could immediately convert captured Civs into more mil... so you rolled through the oposition using his own civs...) Games didn't have names back then... Ken started around the same time.. I think he's the one that got me hooked." Jim is also the original author of WinACE, arguably the most successful GUI client for Empire.
- January 16, 1982: Peter Langston says that VAX Empire is in the works to run on BSD Unix 4.1 (source, local copy).
- July 28, 1982: Oldest power report ever found is posted to newsgroup net.games.emp (source). Game history based on this posting is available on this website.
- May 6, 1982: First mention of an Empire robot program (source, local copy).
- October, 1982: Steve McClure (a.k.a. Ionica), a future head of Empire begins play. Steve later founded the Wolfpack Empire project and was highly influential in Empire's development for a number of years. From Steve; "I started playing back in 1982, probably around October or so...
I played with one of the versions that had weather, and a "plane". ;) No real food, and it had what is basically MOB_ACCESS, where mobility was constantly updating, so you were constantly doing a "census" of every sector waiting for that last little mobility... ;)"
- 1983: Tom Tedrick, who has made massive contributions to Empire, begins playing Empire, after being introduced to it by Dave Muir Sharnoff (source, local copy).
- 1985: Jim Reuter writes a decompiler to help him port Peter Langston's game to VMS (source, local copy). Dave Pare starts to reverse-engineer the game. Peter takes pity, and gives him his latest source code (source). Dave's version becomes the original UCSD (University of California at San Diego) Empire.
- 1986: Dave Pare releases BSD (Berkeley Standard Distribution) Empire v1.1, adds planes and many other features to the code.
- April 4, 1987: First posting on rec.games.empire that is available at the groups.google.com archive (source). The groups.google.com archive is a very valuable resource that has been used to resurrect a large portion of the forgotten history of Empire.
- 1987: Walter Bright, author of an early version of Empire, posts a threatening message to rec.games.empire insisting that the name "Empire" not be used (source, local copy). Walter had sold his rights to the game to Interstel, which is no longer in business. A record exists at the U.S. Copyright Office under document number TX-2-225-307 and under TXu-291-724. The latter document shows this version of Empire to have existed as of 1978. This version developed completely independent of the version of Empire discussed here.
- 1987: Geoff Cashman (a.k.a. Mithrilien), a future head of Empire, begins play. This is based on Geoff's recollections: "I owned an Atari 520 ST at the time. I'd purchased Walter Bright's Empire, and had had a lot of fun with it. I think I went on the net looking for more information and found rec.games.empire. That got me to my first game. I was hooked from the beginning. When I realized the depth of the game, I went to my kitchen, pulled a bunch of food and drink, pulled up my 48 qt. cooler, and spent many, many hours absorbing the game. My first game, I subbed for a country that had bowed out. The game ended a few days after I got into it. My second, I almost got rolled by Brett Reid (Mr. Ed, Resvon) who had to leave the game. Dave Nye (Evil Empire) replaced him, and I managed to come back and defeat Evil Empire."
- 198?: Jeff Bailey introduces the "Kent State University" (KSU) distribution of the Empire Server. Anti-satellite weapons, and anti-ballistic missiles are introduced. 'bmap', one of the most useful commands ever, is added to the server.

- October 22, 1992: In 2003, there was a lot of discussion in the Empire community regarding the general strategy of killing newbie/fodder nations first, then trying for the win, sometimes without fighting experienced/strong nations for the win. There was some thought in this discussion that this strategy developed as a consequence of code development in the server. A bit of contrary evidence to this appears as a post on this date, where Owen Reynolds said, "Over almost the last year there has been one single winning strategy -- take over more fodder than anyone else right away, sit tight and make tech, and nuke everyone else." (source). This quote predates a huge number of changes that have been made to the server code.
