Extracts from the Great History of Thematic I:
That morning the populace had been awaken by an extremely loud noise
coming from the Great Sea. Just in time to see this gigantic tidal
wave coming their way. The biggest and most incredible thing they
ever saw and for most of them... the last...
[...]
Only a few people survived near the centre of the islands.
[...]
Wise men said it came from the Great Sea where legends spoke of a sunk
continent. That maybe, maybe it was the cause of it all.
[...]
It took a long time for the water to clear out. The consequences had
been disastrous. A whole civilisation destroyed. All knowledge lost.
[...]
But now, time has come. A new leader is needed to restore this
country to its former glory and once again dominate all the other
islands. Develop, conquer and maybe discover the cause of the
disaster is the mission of who will step forward as leader.
Hopeful leaders, pray to The Bleuet-God. Request the right to enter
this quest.
New game opening!!!
Thematic I: The Lost Continent. Sign up now.
As I said about a week ago. I am going to run a new game. Hopefully,
a serie of games depending of RL factors :-(
My goal is to give to each of these game a different flavour by having
a particular theme. This theme will mean a particular world design
and maybe some particular option, new coding. It will hopefully make
it novel as well as challenging and exciting.
The Lost Continent setting: see the other message. Never heard of
before by me and Pat Loney. Will include continent fighting
and island/naval warfare.
Now, for more down to earth detail (just in case people care.)

The following parameters have been set for this game:
World size is 144 by 72.
There can be up to 35 countries.
By default, countries use their own coordinate system.
An Empire time unit is 1440 seconds long.
Use the 'update' command to find out the time of the next update.
The current time is Mon Jul 24 15:58:16.
An update consists of 60 empire time units.
Each country is allowed to be logged in 1000 minutes a day.
It takes 12.50 civilians to produce a BTU in one time unit.
A non-aggi, 100 fertility sector can grow 0.12 food per etu.
1000 civilians will harvest 1.3 food per etu.
1000 civilians will give birth to 5.0 babies per etu.
1000 uncompensated workers will give birth to 2.5 babies.
In one time unit, 1000 people eat 1.0 units of food.
1000 babies eat 12.0 units of food becoming adults.
Banks pay $200.00 in interest per 1000 gold bars per etu.
1000 civilians generate $4.33, uncompensated workers $1.78 each time unit.
1000 active military cost $83.33, reserves cost $8.33.
Happiness p.e. requires 1 happy stroller per 5000 civ.
Education p.e. requires 1 class of graduates per 4000 civ.
Happiness is averaged over 48 time units.
Education is averaged over 192 time units.
The technology/research boost you get from the world is 33.33%.
Nation levels (tech etc.) decline 1% every 96 time units.
Tech Buildup is limited to logarithmic growth (base 2.30) after 1.00.

We believe that a strong military is a requirment of any nation but a peaceful military nontheless. We believe that the only chance of survival is for nations to work together, and with this we ask all for peaceful coexistance.

Radio Bleuet International brings you :
Thematic I: The lost continent.
Third week report
We had a few problem with the linux-empire combination but the game
managed to progress quite a bit.
Land ! Land ! Shout someone on this little Barsoom frigate that had
been at sea for so long. They were starting to loose all hope but
they did it. They found the lost continent.
A few awards to keep it going...
Yellow Jersey: Cathouse
Columbus award : Barsoom for being the first to discover land
Viking Award: Ravenwood for being the first to see the continent
but not landing !
Alexander award: ST:TEG for the first kill
Picsou award: Barsoom for his greediness.
Nick Leesson award: Solvind for his money managment skills
Desjardins award: Simcountry and Stryker for their money managment skills
Jesse James award: Cathouse for his money managment skills.
Japanese award: Spitzberg for his efficiency
This week saw the start of the action in this game to the excitement of
the Bleuet-god. It all started by ST:TEG deciding that his neighbour
didn't have enough mils or maybe just that ST:TEG needed more land.
Whatever was the justification for such a violent act, WildStorm never
saw it and never will. His absence at the update probably saved him from
the dreadful display of devastation. Maybe better coming back with zero
sectors than trying to defend when one doesn't even have any reserves...
The result gave ST:TEG the yellow jersey for a short time. The only
known comment from ST:TEG about this act is:
-------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from ST:TEG, (#12) dated Mon Aug 7 12:17:18 1995 <<burp>> --------------------------------------------------------------------
WildStorm used a few more words
-------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from WildStorm, (#14) dated Tue Aug 8 07:47:35 1995 General Jack Daniels opened his eyes for the first time in two days after celebrating his birthday with Fluzy twins Bitsy and Betsy. General jack found himself chained to the wall and at first thought it was one of those kinky games that Bitsy and Betsy likes to play but as his hungover eyes began to clear he noticed military and civilian ST:TEGnites walking around. looking further to his left he noticed the mayor and city concil strung up as well. The mayor, noticing General Jack had awoken from his passed-out state, yelled very loudly at the General. The mayor yelled "Jack i am going to kill you. How many times have I told you not to put Seargent Barney Fife in chage of the military. He always screws it up"
Actually I was on vacation hoping I would not get attacked. ST:TEG took my whole island. When I logged on this morning i could not believe it.
See ya guys ST:TEG you would want to give me back my island would you? --------------------------------------------------------------------
Around the same time started another war. TheSprawl invading Wirikidor
island. However this one is still going on with Wirikidor holding on
his land and life.
The example shown by ST:TEG was quickly followed be a few more countries
and for some unknown reasons, other countries followed the WildStorm
example and died before even building a mil... This include Ravewood
take over of Dryden and Cathouse take over of Alpeasak. Solvind is still
trying to finish TepeYahya.
Harsh fighting are expected in the next few days over the continent
with a lot of people wanting the skin of Barsoom.

Radio Bleuet International presents :
Thematic I: The lost continent. Irregular periodic report.
Warning: this report suffer from the "Why use one word where ten can
do" problem. You should know latin people can't be short...
A few awards to keep it going...
Yellow Jersey: Cathouse
Green jersey: too thigh to say exactly, many countries less than an
update apart.
"Maillot a pois": Barsoom for owning more mountains than anyone else.
Spanish Armada Award: Cathouse
Russian award: Cathouse
World War I award: ST:TEG and Barsoom for their fighting only in the last 4 days.
news 4 > news news.pl news ST:TEG sectors taken by Barsoom : 116 Barsoom sectors taken by ST:TEG : 112 changing by minutes...
Elm Street award: Zako for scaring people... by leaving...
Kill list: (since there was a lot of talk about it in here)
Cathouse: Alpeasak, Purple Solvind: TepeYahya, Youtopia ST:TEG: WildStorm, TheSprawl ghost: Marutea Megalomania: Wirikidor Zako/Mithillien: Stryker Ravenwood: Dryden
In the last two week a lot has happened in Thematic I.
In short: (for anglo-saxon that don't like words)
The world is currently dominated by the Cathouse/Barsoom alliance.
Cathouse having the tech/money/civ/army and Barsoom still holding most
of the continent. He has been giving some of it to Cathouse to help
him against ST:TEG. Only ST:TEG have judged worthwhile to contest
Barsoom supremacy over the continent. ST:TEG was at first gaining a
few sectors an update but the trend has now reversed since the arrival
of Cathouse who is now fighting ST:TEG too. All the other countries
seem to be spectator over it. Lack of ambition ? Who knows ?
The only other major war (top half of the power chart) is between
Solvind and Dristonia The rest seems interested only in quick kills.
Money is in short supply, the whole world beeing down to 185K.
U-boats expected on the sea very soon. Still waiting for the first
trade ship.
More details:
A most notable fact and not related with the play but badly
influencing it was the unreliability of the machine at the end of the
3rd week and the beginning of 4th week or rather the unreliability of
it's internet connection. It caused a lot of argument, put me under
fire, talk about cancelled updates, standing updates, backups. In
short, all the hell a deity would rather avoid. Well, I suppose it's
a part of the learning process. I'll let ST:TEG explain what happened
--------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from ST:TEG, (#12) dated Tue Aug 8 17:12:34 1995 "Scotty, get those warp engines going. We need more mobility." "I'm trin' mu best cap'n. But they just dona respond." "Spock. What's wrong? Why can't we move?" "Fascinating Captain. Computer diagnostics indicate that we have a bad emp_update." "Emp_update. Vat is an emp_update, Capteen?" "I believe Mr. Chekov, the emp_update is the, the, the... Spock, what the hell is an emp_update." "It's an ancient piece of software. Origins are early Earth. It allows energy from the matter/anti-matter pods to be processed into goods, food, raw materials, and, of course mobility." "Damit Spock, this is star ship, not some global multi-player political/ economic/military simulation. Or did those pointy ears of yours miss out on that part of the conversation?" "Leave him alone, Bones. Spock, when can we expect this emp_update to be executed again?" "Unknown Captain. There is a normal frequency of them, spotted with some seemingly random occurances. There may be one at lunch time tomorrow." "Okay. Keep me informed. Mr. Sulu, you have the Con. I'm going to be basting another one of those green Orion women. Don't call me unless the klingons attack." ---------------------------------------------------------------------
It has since stabilised and hopefully will stay that way. We are
suppose to get a full T1 connection soon so I have hopes. After this
hell, the players started to find it abnormal to have a working connection
--------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from Lorphos, (#8) dated Wed Aug 16 11:59:37 1995 What's this? o The machine has been up all day o Update is approaching o Everything is great. I must be dreaming. (c: Let's wait until after the update.
> Announcement from Holsation, (#1) dated Wed Aug 16 12:00:17 1995 *** Holsation Daily Times *** ------------------------ A strange thing happened to the world after the update on Tuesday: No storms, no tel. co., no sky falling on someone's head. The game seems to be stable for almost 24 hours, and the real game independent from the luck of successfully connecting begins! ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Spitzbergen had some problems of his own making:
--------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from Spitzbergen, (#5) dated Thu Aug 10 14:46:44 1995 Argh!! I almost had a heart-attack when I logged in and got a
'You lost your capitol... better designate one'
THEN I remembered that I moved my capitol :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Humm, I still don't know what to think of it. I wouldn't have dared announcing it. Hopefully for him, nobody took it for an admission to newbieness since he is still alive although under another name.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from Heartland, (#5) dated Fri Aug 18 11:42:21 1995 FROM Heartland Foreign Ministry
Worldwide Announcement: the regime of Spitzbergen has been recalled by the parent SHC High Command. Replacing it will be a more ruthless government headed by the Heartland Headquarters. The SHC feels this change necessary due to the poor performance of Spitzbergen thus far, and hopes Heartland will deal with such a hostile environment better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ravenwood decided that tech was needed after all (no more Temekula
imitation) and tried to scare some countries in the process:
--------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from Ravenwood, (#13) dated Fri Aug 18 12:55:37 1995 Alas - I suppose it's time to fire up the war machine.
Edu: On Tech: On Research: On Military: On Navy: On Army: On
Who will be the lucky winner of a Ravenwood visit? You decide.
Will it be the big bully on the block, Barsoom? He most unpolitely removed us from the large continent.
Will it be Zako? The small middle-eastern nation trying to build up a force to prevent hostile takeovers.
Will it be one of the 9 or so nations w/ less than $10K cash? Ripe little islands which cannot be defended without the military and units that cost so much.
Or will it be you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------
It did seem to have an effect on Zako (#17) however. After having been
waging a long war against Stryker and finally having him at his mercy
once Stryker got broke, he decided to leave (or did he just change his
name to scare others off, may well have been even more succesful than
Ravenwood)
--------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement from Mithrilien, (#17) dated Fri Aug 18 14:55:27 1995 Hello, world. What's the update schedule for this game?
> Announcement from Mithrilien, (#17) dated Fri Aug 18 14:58:32 1995 Ok, starting in 14th place...I wonder how far I can get in two weeks... ---------------------------------------------------------------------
For some reason, the new name of country #17 had some effect on the
world and telex soon started to arrive... Anxious to ally ?
Dristonia having been in the top five of the power chart for quite a
while rightly decided he needed a conquest to solidify his position, he
chose Youtopia as his victim. The campaign was working slowly but
surely but Solvind didn't think so and charged in the half dead
Youtopia and the tired Dristonia army. He has since been very
successful and holds most of Youtopia land. Dristonia fell sharply in
the power chart but is far from being dead, his home island untouched and
by far the wealthiest nation with 40K. A long war is expected.
In other corners of the world, Cathouse took over Purple with very
little resistance and landed on the continent. Barsoom let him take a
lot of sector and their alliance declaration made official
today was long overdue judging by the number of telegrams exchanged
and the fact that Barsoom was defending the continent against
everybody but Cathouse.
In between two fight with the Barsoom/Cathouse alliance, ST:TEG found
a few spare mils to take over TheSprawl that didn't offer much
resistance. And ghost took Marutea without resistance either.
Megalomania finally managed to get through Wirikidor resistance.
"Chapeau" to Wirikidor who fought first TheSprawl then Megalomania and
managed to survive at the bottom of the power chart for more than a
week but the conclusion finally arrived and was probably inevitable at
that point.
There was some fighting between ghost and Barsoom with each of them
alternatively landing on each other home island. They have been
quiet lately and we are looking forward for more development.
Lorphos had a go at Andor. He met a far stronger than expected
resistance. Andor won back all of his start island and Lorphos is back
at the starting point. However, with Andor now at the bottom of the
"still alive" power chart, his life expectancy is to be questioned.
gotham attacked Loonie_bin, he currently occupy only a beachhead on
his home island but managed to make him go broke so it should now be
only a matter of time.
Lastly, Hearland went for Holstation and Ravenwood for
SimCountry. More to come on these front.
Now, let's bring the U-boats.
And finally the power report:

Don't call me unless the klingons attack." > Announcement from Lorphos, (#8) dated Wed Aug 16 11:59:37 1995 What's this? o The machine has been up all day o Update is approaching o Everything is great. > Announcement from Ravenwood, (#13) dated Fri Aug 18 12:55:37 1995 Alas - I suppose it's time to fire up the war machine.
