Well, as they say, "talk is cheap, put your money where your mouth is."
They also say "put up or shut up". (Who is "they" anyway? :) )
Ok, since Renaissance I was a "test" game of the new code, Renaissance II
  should follow suit (sort of).
I've been spouting off with ideas, and things that should be tried.
Well, I'm going to take the time and run a new game to test some of my
ideas (and some other's ideas as well.)
Ideally, this game will flush out the good, the bad and the ugly of some
of the ideas that have been floating around. Obviously, since I'm running
it, I'm trying my ideas first. :) The best testers of this will be the
critics. Let's see if they show up, and have the guts to show it...
I fully expect feedback from the players on what they like/dislike in
the game, especially on the "tweaks" being tried here. And an overall
evaluation of the game at the end would be good too. Test games can't
work if you don't get feedback. Naturally, the more the better,
especially those with opinions on these types of things.

Preferably, no co-ruled countries, but I won't disallow them from playing
(this was a request of many players to disallow them, but we'll leave that
  for another game.)
To sign up, send e-mail to "ionica@empire.net" with the following:

Now, for a few specifics. The game will start Monday, March 3rd, with the first update on Tuesday, March 4th. The host will be 149.84.4.2 and the port will be 6669. Not sure on the world size, and I'll take as many players who sign up, with a provision that it be divideable by 3 (you'll see why below.) The code version will be whatever is the latest by the end of February (right now, 4.0.6)
Here are the specific game details:
Blue coloring on countries in the power charts indicates the eventual winners of the game.
Two days after start, March 19, 1997
Well, it's been 2 updates now (should be 3, but where would a game be without a hiccup. :) )Things are already starting to look a little dicey. Just a refresher, but this is a (2) 32 ETU update per day game, with 180 sector start islands and 3 players per island to start. There are 30 countries, so 10 islands. Using Wolfpack code of course. :)
So far, limited fighting has broken out in border disputes. All countries (except 1) broke by the first update, and all were broken by the second update.
Below is the power report. Nothing major to report, but stay tuned, we'll see what turns up.
Hopefully, the players there will post their own points of view on the game as well, and we could really see how the game progresses from many points of view.

Nine days after start, March 26, 1997
Well, it's now week two of the Renaissance II game. 12 updates have gone
by, and the world is still grinding it out on the ground.
Feel free to poke in and look around, the host is 149.84.128.9 and port
  is 6665. There is a visitor account, which is visitor/visitor. It's a
32 ETU game with 2 updates per day.
So far, a few islands have seen peace, and a few of these players are
spending as much cash as they possibly can as fast as they can.
A few notes of interest:
Pinky&theBrain and beep punted Grimland faster than you could say,
"Hey Pinky, you know what we are going to do tonight?" The player
running Grimland left the country in the charge of extremely capable
hands, after only being on for the first update, and was supposedly
not happy when he came back to the "You have several new telegrams",
"You lost your capital . . ." and "cen * - No sectors" messages
awaiting him. Seems the babysitter partied just a *little* too hard,
and misplaced his country on him.
At the same time, Park Place and Frumple sent Highlander packing,
bagpipes and all. Not much to say here, other than "Hasta la Vista,
Baby." Highlander went down valiently and quietly.
During all of this, there have been other skirmishes going on. The
most public is the Mithrilien/^^^ vs Luxuria. This one has been long
going, and Luxuria has been making Mithrilien/^^^ pay dearly for every
inch of ground they have been able to gain.
In addition, Cathouse has somehow managed to push back both Krikkit and
Kelewan, and is looking to be the first to gain solitary control of an
  island.
Other skirmishes are going on as well, but the most fun seems to be
being had by the relatively new players of Tiki/Goshen vs. Corea.
These three are having what looks to be an absolute ball and having a
very fun looking fight. This one looks to be the best battle waged
  yet.
Rumor has it that the tech infernos are blazing away, as anyone who is
anyone is trying to push tech as quick and as soon as they can. It also
seems that flying things are soon to be seen, and the first shots have
just recently rung out around world.
A few observations (from myself and from some of the players), and
  then the power report.
This game has unlimited gold and oil, but the resources are very
sparse. This seems to have gone over rather well, in that the players
no longer have to keep moving people around to dig up dust. There
were rumors of a large gold bar population explosion, but from the
budgets below, these rumors seem to be false.
In addition, the 32 ETU updates have made production of things very
interesting. All countries are faced with what seems to be huge
tradeoffs on what to produce (mil, tech, bars, units, ships, etc.)
since production is not all that high per update, but the choices for
things to build is tremendous. This seems to be quite well received
too, and it seems that lower ETU updates seem to make things much more
balanced, at least in the early goings it has. (This is compared to
the almost complete standard of 60 ETU updates.)
One minor complaint some people had were the 2 updates per day (this
was relatively minor, except for 1 or 2 people who thought it was
major) and most people seemed to agree that since the game is
progressing along nicely and rather quickly, that it's not really a
  negative.
So far, the biggest win seems to be that there were no land units
until tech 40. This gave everyone a chance to live a while before
getting creamed (well, a few updates at least - and Grimland and
Highlander were no slouches :) ) and has kept the wars frantic and
interesting. So far, no complaints about this at all, and anyone
who even mentioned it liked it.
Another thing that has been mentioned, but not tested yet is that tech
in this game is scaled by population once you get up past 50,000
civilians. We will have to see what that does to the larger countries
vs. the small tech mongers, once we get to that point. No real
complaints here, but a few curious comments. :)
All in all, so far, it seems like a pretty good game.
And now, the latest power report.

WOOF!!!
This is the view of Renaissance II from the backup Deity's perspective. Since Steve's Week #2 update, the fur has been FLYING. Tech levels have allowed units to become numerous now, and planes are making their presence felt. And, we've seen the first off-island expansion of the game.
With the 32 ETU updates, civ growth has been slower than what most people have seen in 60 ETU games, and this has made players make decisions on where to put their precious few civs. Most islands still have significant expanses of unpopulated regions left at this stage, even for countries that have been at peace all game. Countries who have been at war, and had to put significant amounts of civs into
enlistment centers are seeing themselves even more civ-starved now. With Battleships and airforces popping up all around, it remains to be seen if the civilian populations of the world will soon find *themselves* as the primary target of other
nations looking to carve an advantage for themselves.
The Early wars of the game have begun to be sorted out now; Cathouse killed off both Kelewan and Krikkit, becoming the first player to own an entire island himself...no small feat! I imagine at this point Cathouse wishes civilians were a purchasable commodity :) He's got the room for the people, if they would just come. :)
The other 1-vs-2 battle (where 1 player was doing well against the other two on his island) Corea's two opponents have gone down in flames as well...Tiki and Goshen. Unfortunately for Corea, it was Pinky&theBrain that did the killing there...Corea now
finds himself sharing his piece of the rock with the now-biggest country in the game. And by capturing Tiki and Goshen basically intact, Pinky's population is nearly double anyone else's now.
Mithrilien and ^^^ have just about finished off Luxuria, but the fight left them in pretty rough shape. Using a scorched earth policy that made the Russians look like bleeding hearted wimps, Lux managed to sell off his bars, kill his civs, and leave piles
of mil around for Mith/^^^ to slog though...being broke, Lux can't attack anymore, but he's got 3 sectors still holding out. Mithrilien has been left with only 2/3 the population of the countries which didn't have the fight he did, and ^^^ has been
reduced to barely more than 1/3 the population the others have. And while Mith's finances remained in decent shape thru the war, ^^^'s were decimated...he went from tech leader to tech-also-ran during the fight, and is left with $15K in his treasury against an outstanding loan balance of $40K... Rumors of Mafia interest
in Tedrick's country have already started. :)
Other battles have seen Doorbell finish off Horgoth, and GroundZero nearly finish off XOX.
But the only island-hopping attack has been Pinky...SO FAR :) Several strong countries have been quiet, and arms levels ARE building ;)
Stay tuned, and drop in the visitor account and watch, it's been a GREAT game!
MadDog of UUCP
Four weeks after start, April 16, 1997
Well, the endgame is rapidly approaching, and is pretty much here.
Nukes are a flying, but in an astounding touch of diplomacy, Pinky has
declared neutral to the world and taken a non-combative stance against
the rest of the world. Thus, he has yet to throw a punch in the last
  5 updates.
The tech leaders are building nukes for the highest bidders, while some
of the second tier countries are just now getting to nuke tech.
Based on feedback from the players, the renewable resources idea for
gold and oil is a favorite, followed closely by the removal of SUPER_BARS.
The former seems to have lessed some time constraints of some players,
while the latter has made banks a valuable asset and target once again.
One of the other mods, the tech costs rising with population, has had
mixed responses. But, in addition with the Wolfpack code allowing
such great interactionsb between allies, it has made some curious
results. Basically, it is well known that there are 2 tech leaders in
the game. And one of them is about 1/5th the size of the other. What
this mod seemed to help was to keep a small country competitive in
tech (MHO) as long as his allies stood by him. And that they did...
Hopefully, those players will post some of their own stories/views to
the newsgroup so you casn see the players' perspective on the game.
Below is the current power report. As you can see, planes are dominant
in this game. And the players seem to like that.

The winners of this game were Cathouse, Frumple, and Park Place
Ok, Renaissance II is over, and Cathouse/Frumple/Park Place are the winners.
Note that both Pinky and Mithrilien withdrew from the running on their own, and the rest of the world went along with it. By this point, Metallica had been nuked into the stone age. He just didn't realize it yet.

(Additional summary written by one of the winners)
Renaissance II ended earlier this week, with Frumple/Park Place/Cathouse
claiming the win. Due to some of the bizarre diplomatic moves in this
game, perhaps it will be nicknamed 'The curse of the Yellow Jersey' :)
because all the countries who at one point held the #1 slot for
various reasons ended up having to take their country out of the
  running.
A quick re-cap of the game from my (Frumple) point of view. (feel free
to comment, I'm sure people have a different spin on how things worked out :)
Game started with 3 countries starting on a 180 sector island,
seperated by some deity mil. Updates were twice a day at noon and
midnight EST. War on my island started started within the first
couple updates as Park Place and Frumple decide that the citizens of
Highlander would much rather be working for us. :) Similarly
Pinky&theBrain and beep began work on Grimland, with us and pinky/beep
clearing our respective islands around the same time. In the
meanwhile Luxuria is being double teamed by Mithrilean/^^^, a losing
battle but he fights like a madman till the end. Other skirmeshes
break out, Cathouse amazingly fights through both his neighbors at the
same time and eventually becomes the first to control an entire
  island.
Back on the Frumple island we had our sights set on the
Tiki/Corea/Goshen island, but Pinky manages to get there a couple
updates before us and grabs it away. Time to look for another target.
With an ever growing Pinky to the north and the Mith island to the
east we decided to venture south to the lands of Doorbell/harmless.
This was a big battle... with our islands being too far apart to be
bridgable and islands being as large as they are it was a risky
venture. We secured a beachhead on their island and the next few
updates saw some intense fighting, our initial attack had not
significantly crippled our enemies and for a while it was possible
that our attack be totally repulsed. However, we were able to
deploy our planes on the newly built airfields, and shortly after
that achieved air supieriority on their island which led to the
  beggining of their downfall.
Pinky/beep have not been idle during this time either having munched
another island, and were starting to reach critical mass. With the
help of Cathouse, the Metallica/El_rancho/Dristonia alliance
spearheaded the attack against Pinky/beep, with Thefirm later joining
the fray. Nuke tech was approaching fast, Metallica trailing behind
the tech leader and yellow jersey carrier Pinky. The way the
alliances were shaping up at this point are of note. Pinky/beep
(#1/#2 on the power chart) were naturally allied, aswell as pinky
being allied with Mith. On the other side actively fighting pinky at
this point was the Metallica/el_rachno/Thefirm/Dristonia alliance.
Cathouse and Metallica have to be credited for mobilizing the
anti-pinky efforts, without them things would likely have been much
different. After Park and I finished up the Doorbell island, we began
preparing for joining up and invadeing pinky. Pinky/beeps rapid
advance had been halted amid intense fighting with
el_ran/metal/thefirm and was mired in el_rancho territory. Cathouse
started flying sorties against another pinky front. Up to this point
Park and I had remained neutral, Park Place started attacking Pinky
and did some significant damage to a portion of one of his islands.
Earlier in the game I had arranged a non-agression treaty with pinky
and could not join immediately, but at that point gave pinky notice
that the treaty would be ending in 3 updates.
The next update brought a very surprising move by pinky. With pinky
now looking at a 7-country alliance arrayed against him he bows out!
He discaims all rights for claiming a victory, declared neutral to the
world and became a non-participant. Much to the dismay of beep who
although gave a good fight was in subsequent updates systematically
taken out by Thefirm/El_rancho/Metallica. This move by pinky was
totally unexpected by me and left the #1 slot in the hands of a
non-participant country (which made the ending rather bizaree
especially considering what happened after that). The 7-country
alliance was loath to fight itself, yet a 7-way win would have been
rather silly imho. Park, Frumple and Cathouse started talking and decided
that the three of us would work to take out the remaining obstacle,
Mithrilien (who had in the mean time moved to the #1 slot) and then
declare ourselves the winners. The next few days brought the building
up of nuclear arsonals, and the grabbing of some additional land on the
Savioa/Groundzero island. We were preparing to hit Mith in a couple
updates, when he pulled a move similar to pinky...
There were some gripes that we should have continued and attacked him
anyway, perhaps we should have... but at the time their was reluctance
on our part to do so and since Mith would not oppose us, we anno'd our
intention to claim victory. Metallica and TheFirm objected, and there
was a nuclear exchange by both sides. (mostly onto thefirm and
Metallica although we did get hit by a couple :)
Chris (Frumple/Gubble)

Luxuria for an incredible job of fighting Mithrilien and ^^^ tooth and
  nail till the end.
Metallica for doing an excellent job of running the small country,
tech monger strategy and still being a major influence in the game.
Also without Metallica's (and El_Rancho/TheFirm for taking the brunt
of the attack) crucial role in the anti-Pinky crusade things would
  have likely been much different.
Doorbell and UUCP are tied for the 'Flamefest award' for each getting
another country to hate them through their annos :) (UUCP was a diety
helper so maybe that disqualifies him though... :)
And Pinky&theBrain gets the award for most amusing annos. :)
