Original Game Announcement

October 5, 2000

Snow fell through the night blanketting the ground with a layer of featherly ice crystals. A lone rider braved the storm to bring news from the northern highlands. The accomplished commanders of the realms have left to do battle in the far away lands of Parpara. The scattered tribes have been left behind starving and quarrelling. Women and children are afraid to leave their homes due to widespread riotting. New leaders are needed to govern the land and unite the people. All potential generals willing to take up the challenge should send

to johny@empire.wolfpaw.net. Players of all skill level are invited to play. Ice World will be hosted at empire.wolfpaw.net on port 6665. The game will be openned to players Friday October 27th, with the first update on Monday October 30th. Until the game is openned, the blitz running there will continue.

There will be one update every 24 hours with no weekend updates. The update will be set based on the signups up to October 19th. Please indicate a range of times you would prefer and any update times you would not play with. I will set the update time on October 20th. Updates will also be disabled for the US holiday of Thanksgiving and the Christmas week. The game should last between 2 to 4 months.

The following modifications have been made for this game:

GO_RENEW was a good idea; however, it currently leads to escallating bar levels where everyone has too much money at the end of the game. In this game, GO_RENEW will be turned on however bars will turn dust directly into money. There will be no bars.

There will be no uws. The starting uws will be removed and the convert command disabled.

All players will recieve a small amount of free education, happiness, and technology. Hopefully this will allow new players to get some toys to fight back with. Countries that want to dominate the world will need to supplement the free levels.

The lawnmower command, err I mean the anti command will be disabled. Instead there will be a low tech security unit available to fight guerrillas.

Deity,
John Yockey,
aka The Ice Barbarian Warlord!

Mid-game Updates

Blue coloring on countries in the power charts indicates the eventual winners of the game.

A few days after the start, October 31, 2000

"OH God, think of the children!", Aragon wept as he gulped down a tankard of ale to drown out his sorrows. It was the last day of Octoberfest, a celebration of the plentiful harvest. However several generals had hoarded their food and mass starvation had already occurred.

Furthermore three of the leaders got lost in the snow covered passes on their way to Ice World. Their followers huddled in sancuaries hoping their lands won't be pillaged by neighboring tribes.

If any player still wants to join Ice World, I will be replacing the unbroken countries starting today. Replacement rulers will be given extra civilians and commodities so you won't be behind the rest of the players. Any general willing to take up the cause of these lost souls should send

So far the game has been dominated by talk about mountain ranges, low birth rates, lack of money, and starvation. Escher is proving to be as popular and as hated as Hilary Clinton is in the New York Senate race. Everyone wants to talk about him and kill him at the same time -- and he isn't even off his island yet. Action is sure to pick up as countries start make ships.

Ice World is hosted at empire.wolfpaw.net on port 6665. The visitor

Eight days after the start, November 4, 2000

The lone rider returned to the crystal palace of the Ice Barbarian Warlord. His steed was covered with snow from the long journey. "My liege, leaders have be found for all countries." That brought a smile to the savage king, "Good, let the carnage begin."

Ice World is having a slower start than usual games. This is allowing inexperienced players more time to set up their countries and has allowed me to find replacements for unbroken and abandoned countries. All thirty countries are now being actively ruled. All have shown that they understand the basics of setting up a country and are learning. Starvation that was common for the first couple updates has been reduced to a minimal level. Many countries have built ships and started to explore the world. Several have claimed many small islands spread out between the start islands. So far money has been tight. Don't be surprised if they start asking the TMOCON countries for loans.

Having gone a full week without killing anyone, Escher has become restless. Bellum declared war on Escher right after breaking. These two countries have been at the top of the power chart for most of the first week. Now that they have discovered that they are neighbors has set the stage for an interesting battle right from the start.

Two weeks after start, November 11, 2000

It was an ominous week for empire. First the mailing list disappears, then tmocon self-destructs. Even Ice World was affected, as a power surge at wolfpaw.net took out several machines. When the server came back up, the system time had shifted causing an unscheduled update to occur on Monday. Fortunately the error was quickly caught and data was restored from a backup from right before the update.

Once these errors were fixed, Ice World continued with the major news of the week being the fued between Bellum and Escher. Bellum had several early victories -- pushing Escher off of two disputed islands and attacking Escher's homeland. At this point, the TV networks called the war in favor of Bellum. However Escher has reclaimed his homeland and returned to the disputed islands. The battle is now too close to call.

Despite warnings about unpredictable behavior of bank production as countries approach deficit, several players toyed with the solvency of their nations. Some modifications have been made to make bank production more predictable; however, a few governments have failed to maintain to production of thier economies. Knowing the kind hearted soul of the empire community, I predict that others will come to their aid soon.

Several other fronts may soon be seeing action. Cherek has been having a minor disagreement with his neighbors Blimp and MunchMunch. Lorphos liberated an island from Myseria on Friday. With all countries now able to produce land units, more action is expected soon. After all we want to see more of this:

Fri Nov 10 22:08 Bellum execution squads gun down helpless Escher civilians

Summary of the third week of Ice World.

Slobadan Milosevic had regained power is Yugosavia. His right hand man Arkan had gathered up large groups of ethinic minorities in Serbian concentration camps where they were slowly starving to death. The Italian army had to act to put an end to the ethnic cleansing. Vittorio Emanuele of the Royal Family of Savoia commented,"Obviously the americans aren't going to do anything about it. I thought that the italians were the real masters to make a mess out of political elections, but I must admit that americans are doing pretty well this time. If they learn so fast maybe next time they will be able to have true "italian-style" elections." Besides, the Balkans were much better off when they were part of the Holy Roman Empire. The only question left is Bosnia next?

The most bloody battle continues to be between Escher and Bellum. The tide turned this week as Escher was able to build a fort on one of the contested islands. Bellum tried to respond; however Escher's guns were able to control the area and now both of the contested islands are back under Escher's control.

The Lorphos/Myseria war is likely to expand to other countries in the coming weeks. A Hades raid against a Myserian outpost was repelled this week, and Synchron has made some annoyance attacks against the Lorphos mainland. Meanwhile Lorphos and Myseria continue to battle over outposts between their nations, while sending diplomats to neighboring countries to ask for their support.

Moretime and Synchron are now posturing over the remains of Monon. While the OrionSyndicate tests the will of Phuqem. Several other nations have had minor skirmishes on small islands that fill the oceans. Some emotions have been getting tested. As populations grow in the coming weeks, the small islands that have been so contested will become more important.

So far the survivor award goes to Raist. After a disasterous start, Raist has managed to eke out a meager existance for himself. He has managed to build weapons and claim a small portion of the world for himself. He is slowly climbing up the power chart. I applaud his effort.

The week ended with a Phoenix blitzkrieg of Newbie One. The Newbie economy had been sufferring for most of the week. He had little chance against the Phoenix war machine which brought much to the battle. The Phoenix effort has launched him to the top of the power chart at the end of the third week.

Ice World is now a month old with 22 viable nations remaining. To this point Phoenix has outperformed other nations economically, politically, and militarily. He has rightfully held on to the top spot on the power chart for the past two weeks. Behind him is a ten way tie for second as multiple nations have held the number two spot as wars wage back and forth.

Savoia continued his domination over the Mediterranean with an invasion of Libya. Colonel Gaddafi had been preoccupied with bombing of Quagmire civilians. While the Libyan leader maintained control of Quagmire, he lost control of several islands north of Libya. Satisfied with their gains in Libya, the Royal Family of Savoia has now turned their attention to eliminating the OrionSyndicate.

The feud between Escher and Bellum has continued. Giving up his failed strategy of attacking Escher colonies, Bellum has invaded Brutalia and has dared Escher to come fight him on his territory. After the Thanksgiving break, Escher launched a massive attack against the Bellum homeland. Bellum successfully repelled the Escher advance -- completely destroying the Escher invasion force but not before several thousand civilians were killed. Late in the week Bellum did a probing attack against Phantom which included sacking the Phantom capital. Phantom replied by throwing Bellum off his homeland before returning relations to neutral.

Myseria is holding off Lorphos and Hades. Every update Myseria and Lorphos continue to bombard each others front lines. Hades invaded a Myseria colony only to have Myseria reclaim the island a couple updates later. Lorphos has been having difficulties building an invasion force as Myserian wolfpacks harass Lorphos harbors.

A mysterious figure has been recently seen in the court of MunchMunch. The first act of the mystery ruler was to invade and wipe out Cherek. This prompted several teenage MunchMunch girls to pursue the mystery man. There has been little news out of MunchMunch since the invasion. We can only speculate that the leaders are preoccupied.

Limbo has been busy occupying the Jakaan homeland. Jakaan built up significant dust reserves before checking out. Limbo may become a world power if they can convert that dust into cash quickly.

Dynonia has been seizing colonies from Bosnia and Ironicy. Twice Dynonia has invaded the Ironicy homeland only to be pushed back. Icepick has recently joined the battle and claimed several Ironicy colonies for himself.

Nine weeks after start, January 3, 2001

After breaking for Christmas, Ice World continues into it's third month with 15 viable countries left. An alliance has formed between Savoia and Phoenix. These two superpowers joined forces in order to crush Raist who was threatening to crawl out of last place on the power chart. Shortly before Christmas, relations between MunchMunch and Savoia began to degrade and they began to sink each others fleets and bomb borders. Then during the Christmas break, Icepick invaded several Phoenix colonies. Now both sides of the world conflict are hoping Escher and Libya will join their side for the end game.

The two battles that dominated the early game were resolved in the past month. Escher finally defeated Bellum after weeks of bombing the Bellum mainland and launching an amphibious assault on the Brutalia mainland which had been invaded by Bellum. Real life events eventually forced Bellum to resign. Otherwise he may have been able to hold out for a little longer.

With the help of Icepick, Lorphos was able to defeat Myseria. These two countries now share ownership of the Myserian mainland. Lorphos is now exacting revenge on Myseria's ally Limbo. Myseria's second ally, Synchron, left the earlier war over an apparent non-aggression treaty violation by LSF. Synchron has now vowed to eliminate LSF from the game. Many of the top countries have been ignoring Lorphos in their diplomatic discussions; however, expect that the country being led by Lenin to have some say as the game progresses to the end.

MunchMunch gave warning to others not to poach on his kill of Cherek. Despite this warning, Blimp decided to claim part of Cherek for himself. Outraged by this action, MunchMunch followed through with his threat and massacred Blimp in a massive invasion. Later MunchMunch invaded Phuk Nutz who had been battling Moretime.

Following the battle with Savoia where Libya lost several islands, Phoenix attempted to do the same to Colonel Gaddafi. However this time the Libyan leader had enough with giving up land to appease empiricistic neighbors. This time Libya routed invading forces from his lands. Phoenix and Libya quickly agreed to a cease fire, and now Libya appears content waging a war across the Mediterranean in Bosnia.

Tech growth has slowed down from earlier. Countries are more satisfied with weapons of destruction than investing in rapid tech growth. Active countries range in tech from 130 to 165. Amphibious assaults should become easier as marines, engineers, and landing ships now exist.

Game Summary

In the end Icepick had his way with Phoenix like a two cent sheep. Prior to the Christmas break, Savoia and Phoenix were the top two countries and allied together with visions of global domination dancing in their heads. Phoenix had a eighty sector and five point tech lead over Icepick. In a matter of two weeks Icepick has reduced Phoenix to ashes.

During the Escher/Bellum war, MunchMunch and Icepick were Escher's strongest supporters while Savoia supported Bellum. It was little surprise that Escher would join forces with MunchMunch and Icepick. This left Savoia, who had just started his MBA one day earlier, with no allies and no time against a trio of warlords. Thus while still holding the top spot on the power chart, Vittorio Emanuele of Savoia did what
never would have been considered by the Elven King and conceded the game.

ICE WORLD IS OVER

The winners are:
MunchMunch (Amber,Ski)
Escher
Icepick (Arrakis)

Overlord played MunchMunch for the invasion of Cherek, but didn't log in for the rest of the game.

During the final week of Ice World, Lorphos spread the proletariate revolution to the imperialist pigs living in Limbo. Colonel Gaddafi completed an invasion of Bosnia across the Mediterranean. Escher invaded Phantom and the remains of Limbo to win Icepick's contest.

In the final four days three different countries held the tech lead.

Damn! Somebody parked the Himalayas in my back yard!

> Announcement from Icepick, (#4) dated Sun Oct 29 14:38:36 2000

And what of my suffering?

And my people's suffering?

I'm not sure we got a fair shake.
This island's shaped funny. And it's cold.
Some sort of compensation is in order.

Savoia's head-on-a-stick would be nice,
warmed over a fire, maybe.

crap - that food thing... Well this should be interesting...

> Announcement from Icepick, (#4) dated Thu Nov 2 09:05:51 2000

True. But. Our best engineers, both of them,
have developed something they call "fire".
Which allowed developement of "the Still",
And they assure me the result is a functional
"brain anti-freeze."

If it passes muster, I shall share it
with the world! <hic>.

Meanwhile, our combat engineers have
developed a fearsome weapon, which
they call - "The Lawyer".

Were you talking to me?

Oh my, what shall I do?
Options:
a) Wave my private parts at him and
call him names.

b) Strike a manly stance, wave my private
parts at him and call him names.

c) Build a few more ships, Strike a manly
stance, wave my private parts at him and
call him names.

d) Tell him to eat shit and die. To bring
it on, as he's such a pussy, he doesn't
have any balls to take this chunk of rock
from me. Besides, my citizens are hungry.

e..y) Same flavor as above, but in more
graphic detail.

z) Declare peace, give over my country
for someone who can put it to better use,
and go into retirement.

Well, I think I can honestly say, it's not
going to be Z.

Countries A thru L update on even numbered days.
M thru Z on odd numbered, 'til the end
of the Thanksgiving weekend, I think.

Unless I made that up. I'm not sure.
I am sure there's something in this coffee.
I have to go. More coffee. Now. Yep.

They were confused or something???

Hey, National Geographic ran a full article
on you this month, Gaddafi. Seems you're
really quite cuddly, in a tyranical way.

I mean, you may not get a Nobel Peace Prize,
but Burger King's always looking for new markets.

What now? Can't you see I'm busy!
I'm studying for my computer finals.

- Then what's that woman doing?

Something quite nice, actually.
You want one? I've got several snow bunnies
in need of a good home. But you wanted
something?

- Yeah, here's the latest intel. Might I
ask what you remember as having happened.

Err, we were about to invade Cherek? Yes, he'd pissed me off and sank a few of
our frigates,
which were on a rescue mission to .. oh hell,
I forgot whom we were sending them to, but
he sank 'em.

- Quite. Anyway, I used the forces available
and invaded. Took most of the island, and we've
been fighting che ever since. And to make matters
worse Blimp descided to move in and take a few
of the homeisland sectors, even after being warned
off and most of the outlying sectors as well.

Shit! And we did?

- We invaded Blimp as well. Not for taking any
of the outlying sectors, but for not vacating
the Cherek homeland.

Good. Ahhh. Umm, and you want me to do what now?

- Well, diplomacy would be nice. After all, you
ARE the ruler of this country.

I am? Hell, I knew there was something I was
forgetting. Ok......

After visiting the LSF whorehouse our soldiers were veryt pleased
and decided to return to it. Unfortunately the local ladies were busy
entertaining locals. We therefor decided to show 'm some
fireworks from a local 'f'irework factory.

It's reported that there was much enjoymenent and rejoice.
Up to 2k dust was trown into the air which gave it a nice golden glow.

The view is rumoured to be especialy nice from the nearby banks,
which also got a small personal show.

Quite tasty ...

#1 Munchian Recipe
1 Blimp civy
1 bottle of red wine
Marinade civy in wine for a few hours.
Then slowly roast them on a spit over
a bed of glowing red hot coals for
2 hrs. You can at this time, also
go out in the fields and pick the salad
of your choice. Dig up a few roots
and bake them in the coals too.
Timing is a must. You want everything
to be done at the same time.

Served at a candle lit dinner with
your woman/man of choice for 2
Another bottle of wine to go with
this succulent morsal and you have
a meal fit for a king.

Woo-hoo! Our lovely and talented deity
has agreed to the contest. So, my first idea
was Very Bad, in that picking the date
of Phoenix's cap sack is childish, cruel, and
leaves him and his ally(s) (I know who
you are, and my dog hates you) in a rather
awkward position. Therefore, being a fair-
minded individual and adequate dancer, the
contest rules are as follows :

First country in the year 2001 to increase
in size by sectors, as seen by the visitor
power chart, receives 333 units of my dust.
(Oh shit. That's fifty (50) sectors.)

This growth is relative to the power chart
Right Now. So take your snapshots.

You can attack, explore, and build sectors.
Sectors may be ceded (if enabled), found, bought
created, stolen, materialized, I don't care.

I was going to make it 100 sectors, but I don't
want this thing to drag on for a week.
I'm busy. I have people to do and places
to talk to.

If you feel cheated in some way, good.

Let the contest begin!

Icepick, are you insinuating that we use chemical or
bacteriological weapons ? If so then you should know that you
are completely wrong !!!! Our breath is totally natural, obtained after
long long years of a diet based on garlic, onion and paprika.
;-)

> Announcement from Escher, (#27) dated Tue Jan 9 11:01:27 2001
As the brief spring draws near on the frozen tundra of the Iceworld,
the surviving warlords survey their domain. Fierce competition has
eliminated several contenders, and three of the remaining rivals,
MunchMunch, Icepick, and Escher, have banded together to face
the most powerful of the contenders.

Once the armies of Savoia and Phoenix dominated the globe, striking
fear to the hearts of their enemies. But now the invasion of
Phoenix lands by forces lead by the Icepick warlord has broken this
country, and few believe that the Phoenix can follow his namesake
and rise again from the ashes. Thus the mighty Savoia is left to
stand alone against the triumvirate, like a bear besieged at all
sides by wolves.

Realizing a final war will be at great cost to all, the triumvirate offer
a laurel branch to the Savoia nation. If the noble warrior will
concede his claim to the crown, he will be named first Warlord, and
given a ranking in the new empire second only to The Three.
His nation will thus be forever preserved, and his name shall be
mentioned with honor for all time.

The great Savioa looks around, and realizes other allies can be found.
Still, in his heart he knows that even if he puts forth a heroic effort,
his chances of rallying the lesser powers remaining and winning the
crown in league with them are uncertain at best when he considers the
might and prowess of the three generals arrayed against him.
Weary of civil war, desiring to spare his nation, and wishing to return
eventually to his scholarly pursuits, the Great Savoia reluctantly
accepts the triumvirate's offer.

Thus a new empire is declared over all the lands of IceWorld. All
warlords are called to court to pay homage to the new Emperors,
Lord MunchMunch, Lord Icepick, and Lord Escher. Free beer will
be provided, and Subbie awards to be announced at that time.

Aha. It wasn't just me with some trouble on the home front :)

Early in the game

Me: :) I'm not doing badly at all, hey, it's fun, it's been a long time.
Ellen: :) Very good! I'm happy for you!

After a very short time

Ellen: :\ You mean at 9pm *every* day???
Me: Uh...not weekends...

Somewhat later

Me: I'm doing great, I'm in the #1 spot! Who'd have believed it?
Ellen: :| Good for you. It's a bachelor game. When are you finished?

Later still

Me: The inevitable happened. #2. Savoia climbed past me.
Ellen: :| I'm sure he's a bachelor.

Christmas

Me: I told you about it yesterday, he attacked me and it hurts
Ellen: :| You're hopeless. I got a present for you anyway.

Last week

Ellen: I never get you up this early before. What's happening?
Me: ...fifth spot...very busy...later...
Ellen: :( Obviously lots of bachelors in the world

This morning

Me: I got attacked from behind, it's over.
Ellen: :D Oh, I'm so sorry for you.
