International participation in this game is strong, which is nice to see.
By nation, the players so far break down as follows:
United States: 39
Australia: 3
Sweden: 3
Finland: 2
Canada: 1
France: 1
Mexico: 1
Norway: 1
The game is still dominated by the U.S. contingent, but things are getting
better. Maybe we can all chip in and get those guys in Great Britain a
real Internet link so they can play in the real world...
Blue coloring on countries in the power charts indicates the eventual winners of the game.
First day of the game, July 1, 1991
[by Matt Deluca, deity]
The much-awaited Empire Classic has officially started, with 53 of the
69 registered countries getting underway within the first eight hours.
The first casualty of the game has occurred; the nation of Bloop, seeing
the nation of DreamLands on the same island, immediately threw in the towel.
The towel was promptly framed and placed in the very large and very empty
DreamLands War Trophy display case.
For his performance, Bloop has received the 'Golden Punchcard' award,
to be given if he is ever seen or heard from again.
The nations of BlackCompany and Epi have been ordered to jump into the
ocean by the nation of Resvon, who claimed that the entire landmass was his
based on historical evidence that Resvon always owns its home island in
entirety. Compliance is expected soon, voluntarily or not.
The first formally declared wars have been started, declared by TOG and
Ghostlands against the nation of Afrika Korps. For reasons not stated to the
public at large, the 'AAA' alliance was founded by TOG to counter a percieved
threat from Afrika Corps. The alliance was subsequently disbanded on rumors
that Afrika Korps was surrounded by Revelstone, only to have Afrika Korps
expand with no difficulty to over 80 sectors. The leader of TOG was not
available for comment.

The supplicant bows humbly before the stylishly cloaked figure and
reverently touches his bunny-slippers.
"Is it time?" begs the supplicant.
The figure tosses back his hood and points at the supplicant in a
wild-eyed, threatening, yet hiply languid manner. "Evil walks abroad
in the land," he cries. "Resvon stormtroopers roam the streets and
beat old ladies with sticks. Lersing techno-wizards invent vile
weapons in secret laboratories. Small fodder-countries cry out
in agony from beneath the boots of aggressors. Nations name themselves
after arcane punctuation marks. Thinkest thou that I should expose
my feeble self to this? Thinkest thou that I should return to a world
bereft of redeeming moral values or 49-cent burger sales?"
----------------
Tech production is under way in Lersing and Afrika Korps, with several
nations struggling to join the race. Boat construction is under way in
many nations, despite the paucity of available wilderness; Revelstone
had the honor of building the feared Cargo Ship #0. Initial land wars
have mostly calmed down, with a few casualties; a notable exception
is a puzzling large-scale exchange of rock-throwing and clubbing between
ground forces of Sparta and Dhaulagiri. Also, Taliensis is reportedly taunting
Ghostlands with a great deal of French-accented invective from across
their front lines.

A wizened old man limps and drags his way to a nondescript
storefront. He puts his cane under his arm, and checks the
name on the store -- "Lersing's Guns & Ammo 'R' Us" -- against
a scrawled note in his hand. He pulls the hood of his woolen
cloak over his head and walks in.
Inside, the store is in chaos. Caesar M. of TOG is chasing
Latveria's Imperial Princess through the aisles, firing random
shots from an automatic rifle; a worried clerk struggles to
catch up. Revelstone's young leader is tossing impatiently
through a cabinet marked "Warship Design Plans". Leche and
DreamLands are off in the High Explosives aisle lobbing vintage
potato-mashers at each other.
The old geezer approaches the front counter. Behind it, a tall man,
dressed entirely in black but for a gold-embroidered "Creight
Lersing: Sales Manager" over a breast-pocket, smiles solicitously.
"May I help you, old man?" he asks.
"Fifty Uzis," barks the old man in a startling yet subtly hip and
commanding tone. "Twenty 122mm howitzers. 500 discarding-sabot
armor-piercing 122mm rounds. 250 binary-design chemical rounds.
Three reinforced-superstructure gas-turbine destroyers."
Creight Lersing, a man to whom the Brady Bill is a naive and offensive
piece of free trade-infringing legislature, smiles even more broadly.
"Certainly, sir," he says; "just sign here..."
"EK," the old man initials on the invoice. He spins on his
bunny-slippered toes and quickly walks out of the store...

In today's top stories:
Lersing declares his grasp on the tech lead with the first gun
and shell production. Not far behind, Revelstone and perhaps Finland
lay down the hulls of the first destroyers.
Brotherhood invades Mexico during siesta time, as part of a
radical new economic aid plan for the Third World.
TOG invades Latveria; Leche invades DreamLands; Nobody sneakily
invades Resvon and slowly creeps across the countryside as Resvon
apparently sleeps on, unawares, probably dreaming about the
succubus on Level 23 of Umoria...
Afrika Korps, up to his usual subtle and incomprehensible tricks,
quietly trains 3 ninja warriors to take over the world...

Three weeks after start, July 22, 1991
[by Matt Deluca, deity]
This is the second in an extremely occasional series of deity updates
to the net of the Empire Classic now underway.
At the moment, the world is relatively quiet. The burning issue on
the minds of many an emperor, however, is the status of the tech race.
The nation of Lersing, home of the tech wizards, has had heavy jet equipment
on the trade board for several days now, whereas most nations are still
trying to pilfer plans for the engines. Although the lead is known to be
large, it is not exactly known how large, leading to many a sleepless
night.
Current ongoing conflicts of note include the Afrika Korps - Wirikidor
war, the Resvon - Actium war, and the Revelstone - yac walkover. The first
war started when Wirikidor decided to annex an outlying island of the Korps.
Immediately thereafter, hordes of Afrika Korps troops, swearing in a manner
to make a sailor blush, swarmed over the island, completely eliminating the
opposition. Operations continue against Wirikidor, and the resistance is
considered to be fruitless.
The second conflict apparently started when Resvon launched an invasion
of Actium, only to have the network go out on him for an extended period
of time. When the game returned, the leader of Resvon was still on vacation
at the time of the Actium counterattack. Reports from behind the lines
indicate that Actium forces managed to disrupt distribution of food and other
vital commodities, resulting in severe famine in the Resvon heartland. At
this hour, Resvon troops have regained control of most sectors, and
reconstruction and repair updates are underway.
The final war was more of an annexation procedure than a war, as
Revelstone airborne forces captured most of the yac homeland in a matter
of hours, chanting 'Lebensraum! Lebensraum!' as they fell from the skies.
Also of note is the recent conclusion of a long war between Leche and
DreamLands, with the latter conceding defeat and hitting the 'eject' button.
It is of note that DreamLands is credited with the first kill of the game,
scaring Bloop to death.

[by Sean Eddy, aka Mirkwood]
Welcome one and all to Murk-o-Vision's sporadic Empire Classic
update.
The silent, mysterious leader of Avalon suddenly donned a pair
of mauve bunny slippers with wee sharp fangs last week, and revealed
himself shamelessly as the One True Elven-King. Shortly thereafter,
the coveted yellow jersey was delivered unto the Elven Palace.
The top human interest story continues to be the meteoric rise of
Lersing to dizzying heights of technology. Fueled by staggering
amounts of resource and money input from an array of allied feeders,
the Lersing military/industrial complex is more than 100 points ahead
of its nearest competitor. Lersing advisors have been seen setting up
small weapons boutiques in several countries, including Kzin and
perhaps TOG. This diversification move, which the Lersing CEO
described as "just in case", may have something to do with escalating
tensions in the Sea of Lersing, where Elven patrol boats are being
hurled to their deaths in increasing numbers against the ever-vigilant
Lersing Air Force.
In other news, poor Wirikidor had the audacity to attack two Afrika
Korps sectors, and was promptly and soundly spanked. April Glaspie,
special assistant to the Afrika Korps diplomatic service, promptly denied
rumours that she had told Wirikidor that AK had "no opinion" about

Welcome to the Empire Classic Update, brought to you by the
shock-journalists of Murk-o-Vision News. Later, we have a
special treat for you: the COMPLETE power chart. Why, you ask?
That's about the only way to see where Lersing is now... but
for more on that interesting development, let's switch
to our anchorman, Bob:
Today's top news. The techno-wizard, Lersing, is on the ropes and
being pummeled relentlessly, with no relief in sight. In a pre-dawn
assault, Himmel ground forces and the Mirkwood 82nd Screaming Elven
Airborne stormed the Lersing mainland. Allied prop aircraft flew into
the teeth of a lethal air defense composed of ultra high-tech jet
fighters and twenty flak guns per sector, with heavy losses that the
Elven-King described as "sustainable". Himmel armored divisions rolled
across hastily-constructed assault bridges and drove a solid front
into well-prepared Lersing ground defenses.
At this hour, coordinated strikes by Himmel assault teams and
Elven bombers and mobile artillery are sweeping through the
Lersing rear areas and have reported the destruction of all
airfields, tech centers, and banks.
Lersing tech is thought to have been arrested at something near 300,
still more than 100 points over Banzai and Finland, the nearest
competition. The Elven-King reportedly commented, "I guess it's
another example of 'live by the jet fighter, die by the Sopwith
Camel'," a remark which puzzled much of the usually unflappable press
corps.
In other sporting news, Revelstone tops Califa, Leche sweeps a
doubleheader with Urquas and Hackensack, TOG edges Ilian, and
another one of these damned punctuation-mark-countries &Kapadokya
is leading Wirikidor in the bottom of the fifth.

"Hell hath no fury like a techmonger wounded."
The Lersing mainland is nearly fully taken by Himmel occupation
forces, following an extermination campaign by Mirkwood B-52's and
mobile artillery. But, aided by Revelstone, Kzin, TOG, and Resvon, the
Lersing technological machine lurches forward once again. Secret
Lersing laboratories have been squirreled away, far from the reach of
the Elven Airborne. Warplane production is back on-line, feeding the
growing war machines of the Gang of Five.
TOG ruthlessly invaded the peaceful nation of Ilara yesterday, in an
attempt to remove one of the rebel alliance's financial backers.
Princess Ilara escaped with a few top aides and the Ilaran treasury
in a small rowboat, and was picked up by Elven SAR choppers in
the Sea of Voles.
Resvon commando forces air-dropped onto Nobody targets, and teleported
massive amounts of valuable commodities out of the country using
the market. Nobody security troops have recaptured the taken sectors, and
are reportedly "somewhat miffed".
Elven Insecurity Service operatives have been widely deployed abroad,
searching for clues leading to the whereabouts of Lersing's secret
labs. Time is short, and the Elves are desperate; Lersing is expected
to produce imaging satellites within the next two days. The rebel
alliance, still short of nuclear weapons technology, will be powerless
to knock the sats down. Revelstone and Resvon, both lethally rich, are
rumoured to be slavering over the prospect of obtaining targeting data
for Lersing-made thermonuclear warheads.

After one month and five days of play, the Empire Classic has ended,
in a classic fasion.
On August 5, the Kzin/Lersing/Resvon/Revelstone/TOG tech alliance
declared nuclear hegemony, stating that anyone contesting their declaration
of a win would be reduced to slag. Nobody objected, and the game was declared
over.
The 'win' was given to the above-named countries, who had banded
together to fuel a tech machine run by Lersing, giving them a technological
edge that allowed them to all vanquish their opponents. No member of the
alliance, save Lersing himself, was successfully invaded.
A few honorable mentions:
The highest power ranking in the game was achieved by Mirkwood, who
broke the 70,000 point mark. Due to unavoidable extenuating circumstances,
he was forced to leave the game.
In the deity's opinion, the best invasion of the game was carried out
by Mirkwood and Himmel, against Lersing. In an early-morning attack, the
two nations got together and beat the stuffing out of Lersing, completely
occupying his home island. Thanks to massive aid from allies, Lersing was
able to establish several Zenith-style enclaves in his allies' territory
and resume tech production. This attack was enough to signifigantly cut
his lead, but not enough to save the world from nuclear destruction.
The best nuclear attack of the game was undoubtedly the Resvon attack
on Finland, later known as Iraq. Using several 5mt-tipped ICBM's and
targeting information provided by Lersing worldwide landsat coverage, Resvon
was able to nuke Finland from a top-10 position to a spot on the power
chart previously inhabited only by abandoned countries. Like Lersing, he
was able to resume tech production with the aid of allies, but never to his
former lever, and never enough to overcome Lersing's lead.
Revelstone gets points for having the most bridges, well over 100 at
the last count. This gives him the distinction of having a third of his
population engaged in nothing but fishing, in true WPA style.
Special thanks to Frederic Chaveau, who provided the machine for this
game, and who was thoughtful enough to keep the game in mind when performing
his duties as a sysadmin, notifying the players (via his country in the
game) of impending downtime, and keeping an eye on system performance. With
the exception of a 24-hour system modem failure, system performance for this
game was perfect.
The complete power report, as seen by the deity, is included below,
as is the last count of world tech, research, and happiness levels.
Blue coloring on countries in the power chart indicates the winners of the game.

By player acclaim, the 'Most Annoying Announcer' award was given to
Wirikidor, who infuriated many people with his requests for commodity
purchases. Several bounties were offered to the person who could take him
out, but he survived to the end.
The 'Bigmouth' award goes to none other than Ghostlands, who awed the
world with his 93 announcements, passing Wirikidor in the last days of the
game in pursuit of this award. Ghostlands also gets credit for being the
largest surviving power to have no affiliation with any major power bloc,
achieving his standing through the skillful use of force and diplomacy.
And, as reported at the start of the game, the 'Golden Punchcard'
award goes to Bloop, who took one look at the country he shared an island
with (DreamLands) and punched out. As fate would have it, DreamLands himself
was later taken out of the game, primarily by Leche.
[Editor's note: It is rare that deities make the final map of the game
available for the whole world to see. While .gif and .mpeg forms of the
world are seen, a text version of the map is a rare sight.]
This is the map as seen by the deity after the end of the Classic
empire game. It's well over 80 characters wide, so it's going to be a
mess, but those who are really interested in it should be able to get it
into a displayable format with relatively little difficulty.
Enjoy!

automatically placed on alert. Minutes later, before any reaction could be
made, four jet fighter/bombers entered Ilara's airspace. The order was given
to scramble for intercept.
The first sortie was turned back, but not without cost. When the next one
came, the pilots of the battered Ilaran jet fighters were forced to break off.
What followed was an improbable scene, as five wood-and-cloth biplanes rose to
meet the jets - a brave but futile effort, as the bombers destroyed the runways
of the airfield. In their wake came the transports, to seize what remained of
the base.
--------------------
The princess Daydreamer is taking afternoon tea in her room when she hears
the screams. Quickly she rises and goes to the door, opening it on chaos: the
hallway of the Castle is filled with people rushing to and fro, many carrying
bundles and boxes.
She stops one, a corporal of the Ilaran Guard. "What's happening, what is
wrong?"
"TOG, Highness," he replies breathlessly. "Their planes rule our skies,
and their paratroops are swarming over the eastern province. There seems to be
no stopping them; they are many and we are few. We've been ordered to begin
evacuating the Castle."
"TOG?" The princess leans back against the doorway, stunned. "But...
why? Why would they invade?"
"I don't know, Highness. I have to go, but I'll get some people up here
to help you." The young corporal salutes and is gone.
The princess turns and walks back into her room, leaving the door open.
The tea service rests forgotten on the table as she looks out a window to the
east, imagining she can hear the TOG jets... but there is only the wind.
She asks the wind, "Why?"
--------------------
Over the next hour, an estimated two thousand troops were airlifted into
Ilara. Photographs from the first recon flight told them what they were
looking for - warehouses, industry, mines, farms. The mighty bridges of Ilara
crumbled as troops captured bridgeheads and mined the supports with satchel
charges.
As the assault continued, the leaders of TOG noted with contempt how
little resistance they were meeting. The Ilaran Guards were few in number, a
token force stationed in only a few places. Most of the countryside was un-
defended. Any sensible nation, by contrast, garrisoned every town and village
with soldiers ready to defend against any threat, even in peacetime. Such was
the way of the world. Surely, the generals and senators thought, the Ilarans
must be weak, or fools, or both ... and such countries were merely fodder for
those in a position to conquer them.
But in a few scattered locations, there was resistance. For a while.
--------------------
Somewhere in eastern Ilara, nervous but determined young men and women
crouch behind improvised barriers of sandbags. They are the cadets of the
Sun Tzu Academy, and today they have graduated a bit early. Some of them have
never carried live ammo or sharpened swords before. Now they fight along with
their former instructors to defend the Realm.
Ten minutes ago they fought off a company of TOG soldiers in a short
skirmish. The main attack will come soon. They wait in silence.
The cadets never see the face of their killer. He sits in the belly of a
jet f/b, watching a screen on which numbers and lines flash. The landscape
below passes by on the screen. Voices from far away speak softly in his ears.
The lines come together, and his thumb squeezes a button on his control stick.
The man, in turn, does not see the bombs land. He does not see the
bloody scraps of flesh and chunks of concrete blown into the air, or hear the
screams of the dying. His plane is turning for home before the TOG soldiers
arrive to mop up the few surivors.
Pushbutton war. Quick and clean. For the winners, at least.
--------------------
By 3:30, TOG had taken nearly all of the eastern third of Ilara and
dropped onto several important targets in the heartland. The armies dug in,
regrouped, and made plans for the next phase of the assault. In the meantime
they took steps to cripple Ilara's industrial base - burning buildings, sell-
ing the contents of warehouses, and so on.
It was at this point that the Brotherhood, which had already demonstrated
its policy of expansion by conquering and enslaving the Mexicans, acted to
claim a piece of the rich pie that was Ilara. Their paratroopers dropped on
the northwestern peninsula; their gains included a radar station, and they
gloated over the information that provided them. Brotherhood bombers also
decimated the only Ilaran fort, once intended to defend the now-collapsed
bridges.
And the soldiers of TOG gathered outside the capital city, and waited.
--------------------
"We must go, Highness." The Guard captain's voice echoes in the great
dining hall, hastily converted into a command post. He feels it too, hanging
over the almost-empty room: the weight of a broken dream.
The princess nods absently, still peering at the map of Ilara spread out
on the table. Pins in the map confirm the captain's statement - the advancing
armies will be here soon. The red pins far outnumber the blue.
"I still don't understand," she says, half to herself. "How could every-
thing change so fast? Ilara is a peaceful nation, no threat to them. We
asked only that they respect our claim to these waters, and never forced the
issue... Why? Why are we being invaded? Why has TOG come to kill and enslave
us, to take our land away?"
The captain knows the answer, as he suspects the princess does. Because
we were here, and because they could. He remains silent.
"Yesterday..." The princess clutches at a memory, almost lost in the last
frantic hours. "Yesterday I met with my advisors and the Admiral to plan a
voyage to Mirkwood, a court visit. I was going to meet the Elven King, present
him with gifts... greet him in friendship, in the name of Ilara..." Her
giggles become sobs, and for the first time today the princess Daydreamer
allows herself to weep for her Realm.
The captain moves to stand beside her. After a moment's hesitation, he
places a hand on her shoulder. "My lady, I am sorry. But there is no more
time. Come, the horses are waiting."
The princess nods and stands, sniffling. "I know. We must flee, leave
the Castle to the invaders. But perhaps... perhaps, if there is any mercy in
this troubled world, I will still go to Mirkwood someday."
--------------------
As afternoon faded into evening, TOG attempted to consolidate its power
and for the first time began to encounter difficulties. The vast majority of
Ilara's treasury had simply vanished, along with the Princess and most of her
ministers. Although the capital had been overrun, a temporary government had
been set up in the southwest. Worst of all, conquered lands in the East were
in widespread revolt, and the soldiers there were deserting to the Ilaran
cause!
Meanwhile, nearby Ilian took the opportunity to snatch a few scraps for
itself. Their soldiers captured land in the northwest and began building a
harbor for a fleet to land. Ilian also captured the vaults and caverns of
the gnomes of Ilara, and thus renegotiated the terms of the loan made to their
nation some days ago.
Standing in the ruins of the capital, Caesar M. declared the TOG's policy
towards captured civilians: they were to be rounded up and sold as slaves on
the open market. As there were too many Ilarans to process easily, most would
simply be allowed to starve with the collapse of their food network. "Let
them eat iron."
--------------------
The Processing Center resembles a cross between a tent city of amazing
size and a cattle stockyard. Scared people of all ages are herded along
fenced-off aisles, a great mass of tired and hungry humanity. TOG guards help
the slow along with shouts and blows from their rifle butts. A man falls, and
is trampled under before those near him even notice that he is gone.
Night is coming, and the few blankets in the camp offer little protection
against the cold. There is little water, and no food. In a few days there
will be sickness here. The squalling of babies almost drowns out the quiet
murmurs of the people, the sobbing of a little girl as she searches for the
mother she was separated from. The faces that watch the patrolling soldiers
are bleak, empty.
This was once one of Ilara's shipping centers, distributing goods to the
people of this province. Now it handles cargo of a different sort. Inside
a cavernous warehouse, people shuffle across a concrete floor. The unfit have
been weeded out by this point, sent away. Clerks tally numbers on their clip-
boards as the line goes by. The end of an iron rod glows with dull red heat;
there are screams and the sick-sweet smell of burnt flesh.
The new slaves are loaded into cage-like crates, boxcars without wheels.
Soon they will be flown back to TOG and sold. They are a weak people. They
do not deserve their land, or their freedom.
--------------------
While Ilaran militia units began to fight back against the invasion, TOG
continued low-level action throughout the night. Many spies were captured and
put to death by the partisans. Sometime after midnight Brotherhood and Ilian
finally made a formal declaration of war, and conducted a series of bombing
raids to soften up the northwest. These night missions ended at about 3 am
Sunday morning.
After dawn, TOG mounted a new offensive that was hampered by continuing
desertions among the Ilarans who had been impressed into their military. A
second recon flight was made at 8:25, to survey the new situation. In the
south, Ilarans had built up a line of trenches and embankments during the
night and dug in, while the east was in open revolt. By 10, the TOG had been
pushed back to the coastal range.
Ilian continued sporadic bombing and raids in the northwest, as the
Brotherhood found itself overextended. At 12:45 the last Ilaran bridge fell.
But the tide was already turning in Ilara's favor.
--------------------
A man sits on the edge of a crumbled bridge, looking out over the sea to
the northwest. He dangles his legs over the abrupt end of the wide roadway,
which extends out to sea from the small island like a strange dock. Indeed,
a small rowboat is tied to one of the supports below.
He is one of the men who watch the glowing screens of the radar station,
the main reason that this island is inhabited. Yesterday he watched the
streaks of TOG bombers and transports. Like the others, he ran out to watch
the bridge collapse into the clear blue waters, sabotaged from the other end.
He feels helpless. The screens tell him so little of what is going on
back on the mainland. Sometimes fragmentary messages come through on the
radio. There is nothing they can do to help... only wait, to see if they too
will be invaded. Even if they are ignored by the enemy, they will have to
turn off the radar soon and take up farming to feed themselves, now that the
food shipments have stopped.
In a few days, this tiny island may be all that remains of Ilara.
--------------------
As the militia irregulars and remaining Guard units moved east into areas
that had been held by TOG, they found scenes of chaos and destruction. Many
villages had been burnt to the ground, until nothing but the roads remained.
The grain from farms had been turned over, oddly, to making large amounts of
beer and other alcohol. Warehouses had been destroyed, and shipping records
along with them - the network would have to be rebuilt from scratch.
Fighting was fierce over much of the afternoon. Although their control
of the road system allowed Ilaran forces to move quickly and surround the
entrenched TOG and Ilian soldiers, it made the battles no less bloody. Often
the Guard was beaten back with heavy losses. Reinforcements were brought up,
and by evening the invaders had been pushed back to their beach-heads on the
coast.
The weary defenders rested and prepared. The loss to Ilara had already
been great, even though the war was little more than a day old, and some
dreaded that even if they won the next battles and forced TOG from their
Realm, at a cost of thousands of lives on both sides, it would not be the
end of the war. There might be more airdrops, more bombs, more starvation,
more death. Their victory might be only a temporary reversal in a long,
terrible conflict.
--------------------
The princess Daydreamer stands, wrapped in a blanket, on the deck of the
Elven PT boat #19. She looks towards the east, towards the coast of Ilara.
The setting sun is at her back, and her long chestnut-brown hair blows in the
sea breeze as she searches the horizon for some answer.
The Elven King leaves a crowd of aides and comes up behind her. "It
will be all right. The reports we've been getting from the resistance are
very promising; Ilian has sued for peace, and the Brotherhood have over-
extended themselves. We've... leaned on them a little, also." He grins for
a moment. "Most of your country has been freed."
The princess nods and tries to smile. It barely reaches the corners of
her lips. "It has been a bloody war, and I am sick of it already. But what
of TOG? Will we be forced to keep fighting with them to defend our lands?
Will we ever be safe again?"
A radioelf bursts out onto the deck from below, clipboard in hand.
"Dispatch from TOG, ma'am!" he says to the princess, waving the paper at her.
"They will agree to a cease-fire ... but only if Ilara agrees to stop support-
ing Mirkwood and Himmel financially in the war against TOG's ally Lersing."
The elf spits at the name, out of habit.
The Elven King looks at the princess for a long moment. "What will your
answer be?"
The princess looks back at him. Then she turns away, and nods faintly.
The King and the radio operator depart, leaving her standing by the rail, lost
in her own thoughts as she looks over at her land again.
She has bought peace today. But at what price?
--------------------
A treaty between Ilara and TOG was signed at 6 pm, and Ilian and TOG
soldiers were withdrawn from the Realm over the next hour. The wounds are
healing, slowly. Ilara will survive, and perhaps even return to the top
third of the power chart. But its people will always remember what they
have learned in this day and a half: that they live in a world where might
makes right, where conquest is a way of life, and where the strong are
expected and encouraged to devour the meek.
Not at all like the real world, of course. It's only a game.

Bloopian [Subliminal] Press Agency Release
Classic Empire News: Tue Jul 2 01:03 Bloop throws in the towel
The Bloopian [Subliminal] Press Agency would like to dispell
early rumors about the Classic Government's dissolution.
Specifically, it was not caused by a subliminal [dissolve y] command.
In order to end other rumormonging, the Bloopian Historical Agency
("That's how it happened. *Really*, would we lie to you?") has
released the history as seen from Bloopian Communications...
----------------------------------------
Brunner.cnam.fr, port 1618: 7/1/1991
Time: Break minus 15 minutes.
General Ooze, chief of Bloopian Communications, paced in his office,
awaiting his new test of skills. Only weeks ago the Bloop had
received a message telling of a new world--a new opportunity for
conquest. Ooze made one last check of his subdepartments: "Network,
aliases, visual, analysis, and propoganda departments: report!" He
was not surprised as each of them reported as ready. The General was
concerned, however, at the appearance of each department head--they
were obviously very tired, nearing exhaustion. If only the High Bloop
had allowed them some rest!
General Ooze suddenly realized that he must be getting tired
too--he had had an unloyal thought! This called for drastic action.
He switched the intercom to "all departments" and said:
"Attention all personnel. You are hereby ordered to obtain and
consume a beverage from a nearby vending machine. Choice of beverage
is optional, provided that it contains an elixir of 'sustain
awareness'. Report back to your stations by Break minus seven
minutes. Over and out!"
The General switched off the intercom and returned to his
drink--a particularly strong mixture of "coffee". His mind drifted
into thoughts of the legendary Hot Elven Babes...when the wallscreen
buzzed. Ooze lept to attention as the view resolved into His
Bloopness, the High Bloop. His Bloopness inquired: "Are We prepared?"
"Yes, SIR!", General Ooze yelled, "Break minus five minutes! All
stations ready for orders, SIR!" "Well done. Call me when we contact
the outpost." The wallscreen faded back to the usual information display.
Only a few minutes remained before before the break, but
instead of a final check the General considered his conversation with
His Bloopness. The High Bloop was obviously fatigued, even beginning
to droop a little. Palace rumors said that he had remained awake for
nearly a full cycle of the sun. On the viewscreen Ooze had seen a
pile of various potions to sustain awareness, and His Bloopness was
drinking one of the strongest--the famous "Mountain Dew" from Ironhills.
The break went well. The only thing of importance to
Communications was a brief incident on the first connection: a systems
error--"please notify the deity". A simple reconnection solved that
problem. General Ooze sat back and watched the action: the starbreak
away from the coastal capitol (using the alias section), and the first
contact with an enemy. Fortunately, the enemy had not broken yet, and
was quickly surrounded. The exploration continued, with a sigh of
relief that Bloop had been first to surround the other. The capitols
were only four sectors away, and the enemy had the better access to
the land.
After quite some time it seemed as if this enemy wasn't going to
break. Out of curiosity a couple Bloopian spies were sent to the
site. They reported a single name: Dreamlands. Hmmm... That name
somehow sounded familiar. The Chief Archivist was called to search
for the name. He returned with a reference, one from "Suboceana"
which described him as a "hall of fame" member. The Bloop has always
highly respected Suboceana's sayings--they were valued advisors in the
ways and means of constructing parklands. It was even from Suboceana
that our people learned of the Legend of the Hot Elven Babes--now
our ultimate goal. Anxiety began to return to the Bloopian
Communications staff.
Standard military doctrine was not yet set up to handle shared start
islands, especially with "hall of fame" members. A fateful decision
was made to tear down the outpost capitol and create a military camp
to train volunteers for war. All of the active military joined
together in the enlistment camp in order to train the eager draftees.
This decision was executed approximately fifteen minutes before First Update.
As the appointed First Update approached, spirits began to
rise. After all, there were recorded times in history when a Great
One would not break, or would "punch out" upon finding poor
conditions. Perhaps this would be one of those times. A mood of
celebration began to build as the final minutes approached.
Approximately three minutes before the update, multiple bulletins
appeared--DreamLands had broken and attacked all of the adjacent
sectors. An immediate call was sent to the High Bloop, who drooped
terribly from the lack of rest. We in Bloopian Communications could
only sit and watch, as no orders were given to repel the intruders.
The update occurred. Again, the quick attacks and no response. After
a moment the High Bloop seemed to recover, and called a High Council
meeting of all department heads. Since we were all present at our
wallscreens, the High Council convened immediately.
"What is our situation?", asked the High Bloop.
A relatively young Tactical commander spoke up: "Well, under standard
military evaluation doctrine, in circumst..."
"SHUT UP!", roared the High Bloop, "I want a summary, and I want it
*NOW*!" Fancy language won't save us."
"We're hosed.", replied the Strategic officer. "Sunk, finished,
doomed. We aren't trained for this kind of battle. Definitely not
against this caliber of opponent."
"What can we do now?", questioned His Bloopness.
"Well, we are going to get cut off from most of the mainland--we
might as well accept that. Perhaps we could eke out an existence on
our part of the land. We would probably be unable to really devote
attention to boat-building and would eventually be crushed. I accept
full responsibility as our military doctrine is obviously flawed with
respect to shared start islands. It is my recommendation that we
consider endgame procedures."
A moan arose from all present. The High Bloop suddenly looked
very old as he asked "And what procedures could we use?"
"Essentially, only delaying tactics.", said Strategy. We
could probably manage to keep the capitol for awhile. Essentially, a
ring of fortresses...." His voice trailed off as His Bloopness was no
longer listening.
The High Bloop then spoke, his words seemingly far away "...No, it
would not do to fight here. The Banjo war is already wearying. This
one is simply too much. It disrupts our rest cycles with its many
updates and the slow pace of ETUs. It taxes our staff with many new
details and strategies. Worst yet, it distracts us from the quest for
Hot Elven Babes!"
A hush fell, followed by a single word:
"Dissolve."
General Ooze looked at His Bloopness for a long moment, and in
a breaking voice cried "I will do it. None of my staff should have to
carry the burden." He typed the command, and a red light flashed.
"Your Bloopness, you must confirm--it is that safeguard feature..."
The High Bloop took a deep breath, then in a strong, clear
voice said "Watch and learn, for this is your first experience with
dissolution. Make certain it never happens again!". He pressed a
button, then another. The viewscreen faded...
...and resolved into a view of the outpost. We listened along with
the brave pioneers as the decision was broadcast. The scenes that
followed....................
................The buildings and roads were torn down. The new
capitol, demolished. All traces of civilization destroyed. When
there was nothing left to remind the outpost Bloopians of their
homeland, they walked out into the newly leveled fields, looked for
the Bloopian stars in the sky, and died.
**********
Some might say that we could have fought. Perhaps that is
true. Yet this account is in no way lessened by the facts. Read it
and learn how to avoid its recurrence.
By the hand of the Communications Historian, recorded this
Second day of July, of the year 1991.
----------------------------------------
Thus it has occurred, and thus it is written. An ETU of
mourning has been decreed for Bloopian citizens in banjo.concert.net.
