Original Game Announcement

September 12, 1999

Hello!

I would like to announce a new long term game coming.

The game will be the first EMPIRE INVITATIONAL. That means, only players
rated 6 and higher are invited to apply. That means, submit your stats
only if you won a long term game or if you managed to survive as a
meaningful country at least twice in such game. Newbie games don't count.

The final acceptance into the game will be my INVITATION based upon
your application.

The game configuration will be decided by players, as I set up a
questionnaire on the WWW you're welcome to fill.

http://www.maxho.com/~romm/empire/invite.html

The questionnaire deals with OPTIONS and CODE CHANGES. Since I am no
expert in code changing the latter section is only hypothetical unless
Pat, Steve or other expert decides to help me with it.

And, of course if an experienced deity wants to join me in running the
game, or even take over and run it and let me play, I'd be very very
happy.

Roman aka V.I.Ulianov(Lenin)

[Editor's Note: Game options were decided by vote, and a later post detailed the options:]

Mid-game Updates

Blue coloring on countries in the power charts indicates the eventual winners of the game.

Four days after start, November 11, 1999

A short update from the elite game:

1. Only 20 players out of 22 play. Arrakis never broke and Savoia broke
lately and decided to quit, after a misunderstanding with the deity.
The countries were pulverized.

2. The game has passed its third update. No starvations so far and
everyone has produced education already!

3. The winning condition: ONE winner.

4. The game will test the BERS ranking system and my rating system.

Host: kaplun103-2.tau.ac.il (132.66.134.14) port: 1617
visitor account is enabled.

On the weekend I'll work on the game site at

Seven weeks after start, December 18, 1999

Hello from the Empire Invitational Heavens!

The Gods Trio of The Elite Empire World is glad to deliver to you this report from the Elite Game.

Tech 100 has been passed by most of the players. Two corpses have been eaten totally with no remains left. Everyone is biting everyone and some players suffer from severe bleedings. The ultimate purpose of the game - rivers of blood and carnage - was achieved. Though NATO and Doorbell looks slightly fatter than the rest of the field, they are by no means decisively winning this game!

The main difference of this game proved to be that no one-on-one kill was proved to be possible. So, diplomacy is playing a great role, since you have to cooperate.

But, let's put some order into our story.

The first target became probably the least experienced player in this game - Mysidia (Z'ha'dum). Even he, despite making errors, was crushed not by one, but by two players - Doorbell and Pendookula. This event also showed that forts should become firing toys earlier, to give someone a decent defence against assault even while not being on. Anyways, Doorbell bit a larger piece of the corpse and Pendookula the lesser one, which explains their positions in the power chart.

A long war was going between Bungholio and his neighbours. It was looking like a bung-pile is going to occur, but somehow Bungy steered his shaky vessel through this tough situation, and his opposition reduced to Kraftwerk and McIavelli. McIavelli now has his own troubles with other countries, so Bungholio seems to be even gaining ground against Kraftwerk.

Two of the most experienced coruled countries Old_Farts and Pervo_Peruna look as if they had forgotten about the rest of the world reducing the game to their own personal conflict. A lot has been farted and potatoed (Peruna means potato in some derelict northern language) but the situation looks to be stalemated.

The most argued thing in the game was the Gladsheim issue. Arguably qualifier for this game - I had to include some because of some invited guys pretending to be too busy - he was managing a good game being in the middle of the pack. Then, out of a sudden he announced he was quitting the game. Immediately Resvon and Pervo_Peruna jumped on the likewise abandoned land. But, in the beginning of the game, deity claimed, that he won't tolerate abandoned countries for an easy grab
thus creating handicaps and the countries were ordered to stop.

Then, Lord Corwin performed a great action, locating Arrakis, that was happy to make a replacement. Arrakis stepped instead of Gladsheim, and the deity forced a rollback to remove the grabs of Resvon and Pervo_Peruna. Unfortunately the rollback was about 40 ETU back and this caused some stir against the players. The biggest damage was sustained by Resvon because he prepared a major attack on unprepared Gladsheim, and when the situation arose he made a mistake by announcing that intention of his. Now he had to face a much better player, who was yet aware of his plans. I am glad to state, that this hard moment of the game was passed, and the players seem to be trotting onwards!

Nevertheless Resvon launched an attack and Arrakis defended with a rare
stubborness, in the end repelling the assault completely. Since then the sides continued to exchange minor fighting, but Resvon looked elsewhere as well.

Then, NATO brought up the most successive military action of the game - he managed to take Mhu (who was enjoying quite a good game) out with quite a few strikes. In just three or four updates, last pieces of Mhu were eaten completely. Resvon had a little compensation by taking part in the feast and sacking the first capital of the game - enjoying an income of $512! By the way, money is scarce in the game, and quite a lot of financial action is going on.

Now the game continues with a lot of military action going here and there - several wars just continue with no real advantage felt. Catallica vs. Banzai, Kraftwerk vs. Pacificus, Old_Farts vs. Pervo_Peruna, Pendookula vs. Plundaria, McIavelli vs. Pervo_Peruna, Doorbel vs. McIavelli...

The only country under serious threat is now Pacificus, that is under triple aggression - led by the old enemy beep, while Ski and Doorbell now also take part in the theatre.

AUJ and ^^^ remain the countries not to experience major military action
so far besides enjoying submarine games and minefields. The game features increased torpedo strength and the defenders use it very much.

The tech race is also very narrow. The leader is only some 20% or so
ahead of the trailing active country.

Hopefully the players will add to this post by their own impressions.

Empire Invitational I - The Spectre Of Communism - Short Update.

The game is currently down for Xmas.
The updates are disabled for until Jan 5th.

In the short period between my post and this update two dead
bodies were added to the count: Pacificus and McIavelli.

NATO established himself as a steady leader.

Yet nothing is decided yet. Next posting is planned in the vicinity of
Jan 20th.

Game Summary

Mausoleum Empire Production Are Glady Annoucing:

Empire Invitational I - The Spectre Of Communism, started on 82nd anniversary of Great October Socialist Revolution - 7 Nov. 1999 - is now OVER.

NATO (Escher, Mithrilien) is the WINNER! Congratulations!

Below follow the story of the game since the last post, awards listing, conclusions and power/tech charts.

So, we finished our story last time when NATO and Doorbell were much ahead of the rest of the pack, when Bungholio was bravely fighting back several enemies and when Old_Farts and Pervo_Peruna were sitting deep in each other's blood, tiredly spitting in each other's face.

NATO established himself in a steady lead after launching a fast assault on McIavelli. The mountaineers were caught with their kilts down and couldn't gather for a long resistance.

The war of Pervo_Peruna against Old_Farts was slowly getting out of stalemate in Pervo_Peruna's favor. On the other side, the war of Pendookula and Plundaria was like Iraq-Iran clash without any serious advancement on any side.

Then Pacificus' defences finally gave up. Joined forces of Ski, beep and Doorbell landed a series of crushing blows on this country that was quite high in the power and tech charts and

NATO continued its demolitions by taking out Resvon completely in a couple of updates. Mr. Ed, frustrated probably (and understandably) from the Great Rewind, Gladsheim replacement by Arrakis and Arrakis' steady defence gave little resistance. That pushed NATO fairly ahead even of Doorbell.

The next event of the game became Bungholio being bunged out, after all the heroic resistance he put it. Joined forces of Kraftwerk and Banzai cut off the sheep supply routes, enjoying the furry animals by themselves. This demoralised Bungarmy and despite quite a stoic resistance Bungy was overtaken.

Then the decisive event of the game occurred. NATO was a well-established leader, but Doorbell was still finely in the competition. Unfortunately RL[TM] put its weight on the doorbells and they weren't able to ring fully in response to the aggression taken by NATO. Doorbell's case became even more lost as AUJ, Ski and Pervo_Peruna joined into the biting. In several updates there was no happy ringing bells in the game left.

Pervo_Peruna, on the other hand not only enjoyed the part in dogpile on Doorbell, but successfully completed the war against Old_Farts, thus becoming the second large country in the game. (Though technologically pathetic one).

Catallica and ^^^ were sitting quietly all this time, investing into technology. Catallica was leading the tech race by a fair margin, and a very interesting question was whether NATO will manage to switch from warring to technology to catch Catallica before the nuke tech is reached.

Arrakis, that was positioned in the bottom of the power chart almost from the beginning of the game, was moving up, as the pile of dead bodies grew! Now beep was attempting to do what Resvon failed to. But without a major success. Arrakis fought back with a rare inspiration.

Plundaria and Pendookula boxing was going into N+1st round without any advantage to either side.

The last decisive action of the game was that Pervo_Peruna finally helped Arrakis out of his sufferings and out of the need to repel everyone by a massive invasion that proved to be unstoppable.

Then as the tech reached 220 and the distance between Catallica and NATO that was investing hugely into tech production was reduced to nothing, NATO claimed the victory! For 60 ETU the deity was waiting for an opposing call, but none came, and therefore this report! Actually, the only way to deny NATO the victory was a dogpile on him, but no one dared to call for that.

I am sure the players will be glad to add to my report with their impressions.

List of Coruled Countries:

NATO - Escher & Mithrilien
Pervo_Peruna - Solvind, Park Place & M.S.Gorbachev
Old_Farts - Lothlorien and Amber
Pendookula - Pendor, Rook and Temekula
Kraftwerk - Schythia and Meridian
Catallica - Cathouse and Metallica
Also Mongol_Horde took a little part in Ski towards the end of the game.

Conclusions: I think the game concept worked. We finally saw long time wars with and without victories. We saw diplomacy were it worked (NATO, ^^^) and where it didn't (Bungholio, Pacificus). Most of all - I hope players enjoyed the game as much as I did my first deitying.

Many thanks to Steve & Pat in their assistance to me. I hope the game provided some important inputs to the Wolfpack team.
