I'm taking signups for a new long-term game, named Atlantean. It
will have several irritating options turned on. >;) In particular,
HIDDEN is enabled. Check the version output which I've included
later.
Other parameters include:
We might (read: you need to beg and plead) have a couple of extra
updates at the beginning *IF* everyone has broken. Unlikely, but
possible.
The game will be started (but updates not enabled) on Friday, Oct.
9. Updates to be enabled the following Monday, the 12th. That
should give everyone time to sign up, then sign on and get ready.
The update schedule... I think Overlord had a good idea with the
updates that are spaced out by 28 hours, screwing everyone equally.
So, sun night/mon morning at midnight, 4 am tues, 8 am wed, 12 noon
thu, 4 pm fri, 8 pm sat, and again midnight sunday night/mon morn.
These times are AKDT (GMT-8) or AKST (GMT-9), so convert to wherever
you are.
(note to Overlord: can you send me the appropriate line for the
hours file? I'm having trouble digging up an example for this.)
This means that the first update will be Tuesday morning early, at
4 AM. (since the updates get turned on sometime Monday)
The format is fairland, with 25 sector start islands, a bunch of
little islands, and ocean.

World size is 128 by 64.
There can be up to 104 countries.
By default, countries use their own coordinate system.
An Empire time unit is 1440 seconds long.
Use the 'update' command to find out the time of the next update.
The current time is Thu Oct 1 15:56:57.
An update consists of 60 empire time units.
Each country is allowed to be logged in 1440 minutes a day.
It takes 8.33 civilians to produce a BTU in one time unit.

New 28 Hour Day Announced
The Department of Redundancy Department announced a new
28 hour day. This will give the underpaid and overworked
workers more time to sleep.
Fatigue was the number one cause for the near catastrophe
in the country of Rook's iron mine district. All of the food
was shipped to an uninhabited part of the country.
The prayers of the populace to the Diety seemed to have
worked when Manna from Heaven fell on the stricken
iron mine district. A new Manna on Monday holiday was
announced by the government's Social (not socialist) Chairman.
Attendance at local burnt offerings conflagrations are
at an all time high.
In a seemingly unrelated matter, unconfirmed reports have
several feet of snow falling in Red Square in a two hour

the dog teams are well fed, and shouldn't have any sexual

However, the 4.0.18 server might have some issues, sexual
or otherwise, with continuing to run. It seems that beep
is usually one of the last to login before it croaks. ;)
I've modified the automatic maintenance scripts to do a
kill -9 instead of a kill -15 when it needs to restart the
server. This may lead to some random extra restarts, but
it will make sure the server stays up and productive.
Speaking of production, since the server was hung this
morning at 8, should there be an update this afternoon
to make up for it? Say, around 4:00 PM? tele Howard
with your opinions on that.

Well, that was the issue, whether to have a forced update
in the next few hours. So far, I've only heard from a few
players, and without a majority in favor, it probably won't
happen.
I've disabled the offending command, I'm still working on
why it is offensive, but in any case it won't be happening
again.
So, the updates are back on schedule, and the server won't
be hanging again randomly. At least not due to this bug.

Another side issue: Countries that were allocated space beyond
those that actually signed up. I'm inclined to remove them and
put deity mil on their islands, but I'm open to suggestions.
This wouldn't affect the other extra land out there that isn't
a "home" island. Just those "home" islands that never were
claimed by a player.
The problem with just removing the sanctuaries is that the
distribution around the world isn't entirely fair...
I'll have something done about them before ships and bridges
start coming out, so after that, getting opinions to me won't
matter too much. :)

Unclaimed countries have been removed. There is some
free land out there, but not from these.. >-:) I've
taken an evil course and turned all of the "extra"
islands into a ring of mountains, with usable land
inside. In each of those mountains is a large quantity
of deity mil, and they are well fed! So, they should
fight really well. Of course, since you can't re-des
a mountain, the only way onto them is bridging.
For some reason I'm feeling nice right now (fear that!),
so once you claim one of these places and hold it, I will
change one (1) of the mountains into a usable sector
(likely to be a harbor). Choose well, empire-san...

but couldn't find any. Day after day he was spending in that cabin in
the Congress Palace toilet, suffering from a heavy diarrhoea as a
result of the recent nuclear fallout, planning more Czar
assassinations and sacred communism wars...
V.I.Ulianov was laying peacefully in his Mausoleum. His bald
was radiating in an eerie way and seemed that his crypt was taken from
the Mary Curie laboratory. His head took a direct hit from a missile
and some of the nuclear head contents splashed onto it. He used most
of it as a Deodorant Gel, telling it was great against gnats too. But,
he was peaceful in look only. His crypt seemed tough and narrow. He

that he was having a hard time hitting his pants with his legs in the
morning. Signing nuclear test-bans was another way to escape that

Something stirred the air. This time it wasn't an A.I.Ulianov's
fart. In fact this something made him fart - so strongly that he slipped
off the seat and fell on the floor. He got it. Smelled it. Wiping his
ass quickly he ran out of toilet.
The stir went on. Combined with the fart's smell it penetrated
the Mausoleum and rolled V.I.Ulianov out of the crypt. He understood.

A clarification about the unowned mountain isles.
By "controlling" them, I mean to have possession
of the surrounded wilderness, not including the
mountains. What that means to you is that you
only have to slay one of those divisions in the
mountains... Then, likely explore the rest with
mil. Though if you have another method, be
creative. The task is to control it, I don't
really care about the method.
After you control it, I'll change a coastal
sector (that you own) into an 'h' so things get
easier to exploit the island.

No help, this is a floppy. I've got a backup of the system
when it was in a working state (briefly, long story) that I
want to restore. Backup is on CDROM, so I want to copy
onto the new FAT32 partition. If it fit into FAT16 I'd
just boot a rescue floppy with vfat and iso modules and do
the cp -r, but I don't have a kernel with FAT32 support yet.
Maybe I should work on that, I'll finish sooner.

I wonder if the data corruption the other day might

time and not letting people in while doing so...
Then, the auto-restart happened and killed it in

I'll change the scheduling of that to delay at least
15 minutes after the hour (It currently runs at :*9).
That still doesn't explain why the threads bit aren't

Re: Threading
Well, during an update, *nothing* is supposed to be happening
at all, except the update. So, once the update starts, no
threads are allowed to run except for the update thread. Otherwise
you'll wind up with all kinds of database problems.
The problem with updates taking a long time is the server
assembling the paths for distribution. This is the A* algorithm
at work. In certain games, I've seen it take as long as
45 minutes to build the paths. At one point, it was even worse,
but many people have gone through and tried optimizing the search
code and gotten it somewhat better, but on large games with
lots of sectors all occupied and distributing, it can take
a LONG time to build all the paths.
*shrug* If someone has any suggestions on how to make the A*
even more efficient (or another algorithm that is better) let
us know.

Ah, cool. Well, in the soon to be released 4.2.2, we had
a test case server that was taking 3 minutes 40 seconds to
assemble the paths.
Through some optimizations, we were able to get that down to
about 16 seconds.
Hopefully if this game were to use the same optimizations (which
you cannot since too much code has changed to upgrade to 4.2.2 in
the middle of a game since 4.0.18) it would see the same sort of
speed increase.
Though once we release 4.2.2 you are more than free to try. ;-)

and new cacheing let us know, we'd be more than happy to help.)

I sounded my Barbaric YAWP over the rooftops of the world - Walt Whitman
Early in the game, an alliance of multiple nations formed including
Aesiria, Kondoria, Mhu, AUJ, Doomed, Montjoie, and Amber. I could
have easily joined this alliance and traded ships with them. Instead
I joined forces with the only other nation that wouldn't join their
alliance and dismantled them one by one. Now all that is left is a
single Amber island and nations that I have been friendly with while I
took on the unholy alliance.
I declare an Ice Barbarian/Aityhcs victory in Atlantean. Honorable
mention should go to Pendor for his help against Amber. I would like
to thank the surviving nations for their friendship during my crusade
against the mega-alliance and ask for their support of this victory
declaration.
I would also like to acknowledge Aesiria, Mhu, AUJ and Amber
for their fine defense of their country. There wasn't much fodder in
the alliance.

I think that the Amber/Pendor war a BIG mistake (don't you thin Amber?).
This war really helped Ice/Aityhcs to get an easier victory than
expected.
I wanna thank everyone who helped me through my first Empire-game ever,
and hopefully we'll meet in the future. The glorious Pendor will soon
be victorious in a worldwide Empre-game :-)
