The Ice Barbarian Warlord had made his way to Gobbler's Knob. A large fur bearskin was over his shoulders keeping him warm. The crowd anxiously awaited the members of Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to show up to start the ceremonies.
Punxsutawney Phil came out of his electrically heated burrow and looked for his shadow. He then uttered a prediction to a Groundhog Club representative in "groundhogese." The representative then translated the prediction for the general public.
Punxsutawney Phil, King of the Groundhogs. Seers of Seers, Prognosticators of Prognosticators, Weather Prophet without Peer gave the following proclaimation:
Happy Groundhog Day my friends,
I know you hope winter soon ends.
I am very glad I don't count the chads,
But as a committee of one,
I rely on the sun.
You know what the meaning of it is:
Now I see my shadow, gee whiz!
Six more weeks of winter there is!
"Curse that rodent!" the Warlord muttered as he stormed the stage and chucked a grenade down the hole after the infernal groundhog. Since there will now be six more weeks of winter, it's time to go inside and start up a new game of empire.
The Ice Barbarian Warlord announces the start of Ice World II: Battle for the Ice Continent. Players of all skill levels are invited to join. To sign up send the following information to johny@empire.wolfpaw.net.

Empire 4.2.9 (KSU distribution 1.04, Chainsaw version 4.00, Wolfpack version 2.09) The following parameters have been set for this game: World size is TBD. There can be up to 99 countries. By default, countries use their own coordinate system. An Empire time unit is 1440 seconds long. Use the 'update' command to find out the time of the next update. An update consists of 60 empire time units. Each country is allowed to be logged in 1440 minutes a day. It takes 8.33 civilians to produce a BTU in one time unit. A non-aggi, 100 fertility sector can grow 0.12 food per etu. 1000 civilians will harvest 1.3 food per etu. 1000 civilians will give birth to 5.0 babies per etu. 1000 uncompensated workers will give birth to 2.5 babies. In one time unit, 1000 people eat 0.5 units of food. 1000 babies eat 6.0 units of food becoming adults. Banks pay $250.00 in interest per 1000 gold bars per etu. 1000 civilians generate $8.33, uncompensated workers $1.78 each time unit. 1000 active military cost $83.33, reserves cost $8.33. Happiness p.e. requires 1 happy stroller per 100 civ. Education p.e. requires 1 class of graduates per 100 civ. Happiness is averaged over 48 time units. Education is averaged over 192 time units. The technology/research boost you get from the world is inf%. Nation levels (tech etc.) decline 1% every 96 time units. Tech Buildup is limited to logarithmic growth (base 2.00) after 1.00. Ice World II is now in it's third week. So far there has been few wars or battles as the horrid terrain and deity mil of the Ice Continent have slowed players down. The players have had little to do but expand, develop their countries, and throw snowballs at each other. That didn't stop the citizen leader of beep who buried the cold body of montemayor in a massive snowball fight.
Each country started with a 20 sector valley surrounded by mountains, lakes, and icepacked passes. Uncivilized barbarians lived in the mountains, icepack, and surrounding valleys. The mountains and icepack are difficult to travel through and have made progress slow. As countries pushed back the frontier, they found other habitable wilderness to occupy.

Technology has been difficult to build, but there is plenty of gold in the mountains to finance technology production. The terrain and technology costs have influenced countries to try different strategies. Some are making technology while others are planning on buying high tech weapons from others. Some have expanded by using the waterways, while others have expanded strictly by land.
Action is expected to pick up shortly, as countries develop more than just snowballs to throw at each other and roads through the high mob cost terrain. Later on there will be units capable of rapidly traversing the ice and mountains.

Ice World II has now completed it's fifth week. There has been a lot of action since the last update. Many of the weaker countries have been eliminated, and only fourteen of the original twenty six countries remain. Many of the early battles resembled World War I trench warfare with forts pounding the front lines. Parpara defeated two of his neighbors by shelling their valleys to deity and exploring in.
When both sides had forts, the battle turned into siege warfare. The following telegram intercepted by deity angel spys during the Latveria versus Myseria war gives a pretty good feel of the battle from the player's perspective:
>Telegram from Latveria to PaineWebber @ 02/15 15:21 Urgh, it's siege warfare now :) I've fought through to the edge of his valley, and he converted his sectors to forts and blasted the ice and mountains between my forts and his. My fire and return fire eventually killed all his guns, so I guess I'm a bit ahead in the battle of attrition :) I think I can build and man 2 more forts in useful range, and step up the production of guns and shells :) I built 2 art, but the range is kinda sad - 1.5, so I can only put em on my frontmost fort and try to blast the one fort they can reach :) The mountains aren't too bad to attack from, they seem pretty resistant to fire, but the ice is a death trap... The mountains are way painful to get troops into though. Needless to say he converted his harbor to a fort :) I actually captured one of his forts, but before I could move many mil in, he snarfed it back. I think I've got a bit better economy, because he's converted 4 or more of his home valley into forts, and the uw's are helping a bit, but I've got to ship everything in over 9 sectors of ice, and the front line is in mountains... Baron von DoomAs players technology advanced, countries began developing land units. Early units such as cavalry were of limited use in the snow and mountains of the Ice Continent. Nordic patrol and ranger units have also been developed that move and attack more rapidly through the rough terrain but have limited offensive abilities. Libya was the first country to make extensive use of land units and has invaded several of his weaker neighbors.
The most recent battles have been dominated by transport planes and bombers that allow deep penatration into enemy territory.
Bankrolled by a large amount of speculative capital investment by PaineWebber, .com has built up a multi-update technology lead over the rest of the world. DOTCOM sells his goods at highly inflated prices, but members of the "DOTCOM family" recieve rebates. DOTCOM's technology buildup has also been assisted by allying with his inexperienced neighbors and allowing them to join the "DOTCOM family".
The most significant war of the game so far has been between the forces of Draenor, PaineWebber, Latveria, and Stardust against the loose alliance between Parpara, Byzantium, Hades, and Myseria. Backed by the technology lead of DOTCOM, the "DOTCOM family" has already eliminated Byzantium, Hades, and Myseria. Parpara is is now left to face the "DOTCOM family" alone while the rest of the world watches.
Ice World II is hosted at empire.wolfpaw.net on port 6665. The visitor account is enabled. The deity can be e-mailed at johny@empire.wolfpaw.net.

Ice World II: Battle for the Ice Continent is now over. The leaders of the DOTCOM Family have been declared the winners. They are:
Dreanor (Ski, Amber)
.com (Bungholio)
PaineWebber (UUCP, Parsing)
Each country started with a 20 sector valley surrounded by mountains, lakes, and icepacked passes. Uncivilized barbarians lived in the mountains, icepack, and surrounding valleys. The mountains and icepack were difficult to travel through and made early progress slow. As countries pushed back the frontier, they found other habitable wilderness to occupy.
Technology was difficult to build, but there was plenty of gold in the mountains to finance technology production. The terrain and technology costs influenced countries to try different strategies. Some make technology while others planned on buying high tech weapons from others. Some expanded by using the waterways, while others expanded strictly by land.
By the second week of the game an alliance formed between Draenor, .com, PaineWebber, Stardust, Synchron, and Shakespeare that became known as the DOTCOM Family. PaineWebber, Stardust, Synchron, and Shakespeare fed money, lcm, hcm, and oil to .com who pushed technology. In return .com shared weapons with the rest of the team. Draenor spent most of the game concealing the fact that he was part of the DOTCOM Family. Eventually Latveria joined the family and Calcium was sending resources to Draenor.
With their team well intrenched, the DOTCOM family began picking off countries that they believed were threats. PaineWebber and Stardust started by attacking Byzantium. Byzantium was the only ally of Parpara, and the DOTCOM Family believed that Parpara would by the nation to organize the resistance. When Myseria signed a non-aggression pact with Byzantium, the DOTCOM Family backed Latveria in a war against the Myserians.
Meanwhile the rest of the world was too busy fighting between themselves to recognize or respond to the DOMCOM threat. The strongest of the remaining countries each had borders with the DOTCOM Family. However instead of attacking members of the alliance, they choose to invade their weaker neighbors who didn't have access to DOTCOM weapons. As a last act of defiance, many of these weaker countries sent their treasuries to .com.
Many of the early battles resembled World War I trench warfare with forts pounding the front lines. Parpara defeated two of his neighbors by shelling their valleys to deity and exploring in. When both sides had forts, the battle turned into siege warfare. As players technology advanced, countries began developing land units. Early units such as cavalry were of limited use in the snow and mountains of the Ice Continent. Nordic patrol and ranger units were developed that move and attack more rapidly through the rough terrain but have limited offensive abilities. Late battles were dominated by transport planes and bombers that allow deep penatration into enemy territory.
Going into the endgame, Libya, Parpara, and Ragnarook held three of the top four positions on the power chart. However the DOTCOM Family executed a plan to eliminate the opposition. As Libya was finishing an invasion of Kiltland; .com and Synchron struck from the other side before Libyan units had time to fortify their positions. Gadaffi responded by moving reinforcements against the combined force. However the final blow came in the next 24 hours as Draenor (who was still concealing his alignment) attacked the Libyan flank, and PaineWebber surprised Parpara with an invasion.
This caused Parpara to resign over a dispute concerning whether he had a slow war agreement with PaineWebber or not. A despondent Gadaffi was crippled by the Draenor attack. With two of the three opposition countries disabled, even the gods of Asgard conceded the game.
Ice World II was hosted at empire.wolfpaw.net on port 6665. Ice World II ran using a modified version of the 4.2.9 server. The following modifications were made to this game: Each country had a republican guard. These are soldiers so loyal to the ruler that they will serve for free. Tech bleed was based on how far behind the tech leader you were. There were non-designatable high mobility cost ice sectors.
Blue coloring on countries in the power chart indicates the winners of the game.

> Announcement from Parpara, (#13) dated Fri Feb 16 05:32:16 2001 n old weatherbeaten truck "ZIL" stopped by the Mausoleum in Kremlin. A group of people with the word "KGB" written all over them jumped out of it, waved the guards aside and stepped in. A few minutes later they went out carrying a sack with something what looked like an old-dead body. The guards looked with astonishment. One of the KGB-looking guys glanced over his shoulder and said, "He's being sent off to Magadan, to Kolyma river. He's been found guilty!" "But he's dead?!" "Someone had to be found guilty. No one of the living agreed and the rest would have to be digged out of the Kremlin wall. So we picked him." ... Later in the truck, the sack stirred. A bald head with a goatie showed up. "Got some light?", it asked. Now, the KGB-looking guys don't believe in living dead, or undead, or whatever. They're communists and materialists and each one of them has attended an atheist meeting recently, but they still felt a bit uneasy. More like the uneasiness they felt last time when they went to neutralize some unrecognizeable radio transmitter and found out a cat toying with its owners' radio while the owner was away for several weeks. The uneasiness that meant "Something is wrong, but does it really matter?" The cat, by the way, was arrested and sent off to I.P.Pavlov's medical institute. So, one of the guys, probably the most sociable one, the same that talked to the Mausoleum guards, pulled out a battered lighter and said: "Take your time, Vova, we've got a couple of months until we get to the Tundra". "Oh! Tundra!! Chukchas!!" V.I.Ulianov(Lenin) was clearly delighted. "They lived for a while in a Communist country but they never knew what Communism is. Now they will!" The KGB-looking guys felt a bit more uneasy. Something was definitely going wrong. > Announcement from .com, (#24) dated Sun Feb 18 11:00:12 2001 +-----------------------------------------+ ! ! ! wANTED: SOMEONE TO BE MY TECH BITCH. ! ! If you don't like it that Barbie sells her panties only to Ken by pricing them at $5,000 each and that Ken gets his cash back by selling condoms at $500 a pop to Barbie, there's a simple way to address this. Put 10-20% vigs on both the buyer and seller ends of the transaction. It's in the code to do this as is. Pretty soon Barbie's panties will be cheap enough for all of you and everyone will be offering her condoms for free. > Announcement from PaineWebber, (#19) dated Wed Mar 7 14:25:28 2001 OK, I admit it...I have ...."cannon envy"... Right from the start there were two groups of players. The onces building tech and the ones not building it (and saving the money instead). When the in tech. leading countries got their first landunits and started selling them to the wealthy techless nations (and thus acquiring the money the do further research). That was when there appeared to emerge a losely formed partnership between .com and some of the techless nations. The other tech. producing countries appeared to hold their secrects for them selves (and didn't (openly) cooperate against the .coms). While I was surrounded by bigger countries (beep, Libya, Ragnarook and later Parpara), I couldn't do much.... (diplomacy appears to be a foreign word which is not in my dictionary) > Announcement from Limbo, (#2) dated Fri Mar 30 16:44:00 2001 An excerpt from "Memories of (once again) Fodder" part II. And after making the mistake to travel into Ragnarook territory with a spy unit (actually it was ment for Shakespear). I feared the actions taken against me this week but once again I was to late build a decent defence (and doubt that it would have mattered much :) I see a dark future for the free nations in Iceworld if they don't make a fist against the .coms and start to cooperate more closely against them instead waging war against the weaker neutral nations (like Limbo :) > Announcement from Latveria, (#16) dated Fri Mar 30 17:00:45 2001 I too have kept all my treaties, and intend to do so in the future, even when it hurts. BUT - it's in the game documentation, even to the point of abusing an ALLIANCE to get the jump on another player, for god's sake. The diplomacy tips are full of dirty tricks. So, I *expect* to have it happen to me sometime. If the guy doing it is not a total moron, I expect it to hurt me in a major, possibly fatal way. I'll be frustrated and angry, who wouldn't be, but I'm not going to quit. We in Latveria have a saying: "If you leave the door to the sheep barn open because the wolf promises to stay out, do you blame the wolf when he is a wolf, and chews on a tasty sheep?" Latveria "Small but full of sheep related anecdotes" > Announcement from Ragnarook, (#9) dated Fri Mar 30 23:14:27 2001 From the windswept pinnacle at the highest reach of Asgard, Heimdall, the Warder of Asgard can view each realm on the horizon. It is Heimdall's duty to ensure that Asgard remain safe from those that would attempt to bring the kingdom to ruin. The sounds of war can be heard coming from beyond his sight. From the northwest, the neighboring Kingdom of Parpara has been at war at it's frontier. To the west and southwest, the same can be said for Libya. The rulers of Asgard have been frustrated in their efforts to reach a meaningful opponent. The world of ice has made traveling treacherous and slow. Many a needed delivery has gone missing, stuck in the snow or slipping off the icy tracks, or trapped on an impassable ledge. Asgard has helped it's neighbors the best that they can. Word has come that in other kingdoms, the wizards and scribes have developed machines beyond wonder. As time has passed, the knowledge of the machines has come to and been utilized by Asgard. But still the other countries far away continue to build newer weapons of war. Heimdall has give many hours of thought as to how to deal with these when confronted. There must be a way. . . . Heimdall hear's shouting below him. He cannot make out the words, but obviously something is wrong. When will this cold wind cease blowing. . . . He enters the keep. As he makes his way into the conference room, the voices stop. Too many people start shouting at once..."SILENCE" he demands. The pieces come together. The ruler of Parpara has decided to abandon his country. When the ruler of the common neighbor Libya hears this news, he is resigned to surrender. He felt that if his northern neighbor Parpara kept up the battle, that Libya may have a chance to survive. Without Parpara, and with Ragnarook so far removed, the Libyan governement decided to surrender. Talk about your "Domino Theory"... Heimdall contacts the leaders of Parpara and Libya to see what may be offered to assist in retaining them at their posts of leadership. Apparently there is not enough that can be done at this time. But all who frequent Asgard are not present to hear the news. Forseti, the God of War, has left for other duties not to return for at least two cycles of the sun. At that time he will give his counsel. Heimdall wonders what the future will bring. Ragnarook may continue to expand and prosper, but with most of the rest of the kingdoms interested only in their own affairs, or in alignment with the enemies of Ragnarook's neighbors, other dominoes may fall as well. What enemies of Ragnarook will take their place........ > Announcement from Ragnarook, (#9) dated Sat Mar 31 05:43:32 2001 The news that the wars have come to a sudden end is puzzling to Heimdall. His duties have been reduced to those of a mere market night watchman. Odin marches in to Heimdall's quarters, stands right next him, and {smack} with his gauntleted hand slaps Heimdall upside the head. 'You dummy, Forseti is the God of Prosperity, not war. That's Tyr's job. But fortunately for you, he is gone too! You are a damn good warder, but the whole reason why we keep you here is because you can't remember who is who, and what is what, and you are suspicious of everyone. You are the perfect warder'. Heimdall rubs his head to ease his discomfort. It's a good thing that he at least remembered his helmet. > Announcement from Ragnarook, (#9) dated Sat Mar 31 05:56:18 2001 The meeting of the Gods of Asgard has ended. There is a continued feeling of discontent through all as they disperse thoughout the heavens. Tyr heard the news and agreed with the rest, the wars are over. This is not the Ragnarok, but then again, this is not the true battle and doom of the gods, but only a battle of mortals. The mortals are bound to other things besides seeing a prophecy to its end. It is almost prophetic: Ragnarook, if it would fight alone, would be valiant to the very end. Ragnarook would fight to the end in defeat to the overwhelming powers that it would soon face. The absence of its two leading allies creates the eventual doom of Ragnarook. The gods of Asgard have communicated with each other, near and far, and in the interest of the mortals that hold them in wonder, grudgingly accept the declaration of victory made by the country Draenor. All indications are that Ragnarook the country would have even in the current climate continued to grow, but in the end all the effort would have been for naught as the alliance it faced would have become just too powerful.
