What's New?

Lord of the Rings Empire II announced! See `New Games' below.

Wolfpack released Empire 4.2.12. Find it at the usual place:
http://www.wolfpackempire.com/server.html

The popular update window feature is now included. Otherwise, this is
a bug fix release. Deities are strongly encouraged to use it for new
games, but the new server can't use old data files.

Empire is now in CVS on SourceForge. Building the code checked out
from there is not straightforward, yet.

PANGAEA, deitied by <anonymous>, was won by cochise. cochise won solo by grabbing and populating more sectors faster than anybody else, and by holding them of course.

Mid-Shipman's Empire 2 --- The Ugly Mug, deitied by Mark Ballinger,
was jointly won by wahbit and Aberdeen.

The winners waged war first, and kept on the offensive. No country went down easily, though.

The Mid-Shipman's series of games is for non-newbies who are also not vastly experienced. The Ugly Mug was a seriously ugly world. Lots of twisty little islands, bridges not affordable, tech hard; in one word:
a really cozy place ;-)

Newbie III was won by Pern and Savoia. The victory was contested,
which led to a nice nukefest. Newbie World III no longer needs electric light at night.

Lanny's Newbie games are a friendly learning environment. Well, as friendly as Empire can get ;-)

This isn't the `official' final power report, but it should be reasonably close.

From the Editor

Witness the Nazgul spread terror! Behold the pinnacle of engineering
and magic, raining death and destruction; behold the terrible
trebuchet! Empire returns to Middle Earth!

This is the game that's finally worth the sacrifice of your GPA. This
is the game you saved your marriage points for. This is the game not
to miss. Yes, I'm biased; I played LOTR I. It had all: skirmishes
and epic battles, brilliant plans carried out with skill and success,
equally brilliant plans thwarted by the enemy or chance, heroism in
the face of impossible odds and treason. Set before the backdrop of
Tolkien's masterpiece, yet the game remained entirely Empire.

Greenhorns, sign on and get clobbered (and learn a lot and make some
friends)! Aspiring warlords, gather and prove your worth! Greats of
ancient Empire history, get the batteries on your pacemakers checked,
take your hands off your nurse for a while, and remind us why you kick
ass!

See you in LOTR II!

Markus, a.k.a. Dorwinion

Hint of the Month

Interdiction damage is spread among all the interdicted units.
Interdiction that is crippling to a lone unit can be shrugged off by a
group.

Say you charge a lone trebuchet with your precious firstborn cavalry.
The trebuchet interdicts you twice, doing 32 damage total. That's
almost a third of your offensive strength! Repairing the damage will
cost $1600.

If you throw in just two lousy elven infantry, the damage gets spread
evenly among the three units. The firstborn cavalry takes only a
third of the damage, and the rest is eaten by the cheap elven
infantry. You loose only some 10% of your offensive strength, and
repairs will cost some $570.

> Announcement from DexterPV, (#2) dated Fri Aug 22 10:01:57 2003
Hey wait a minute!
It's "Dog pile on the wahbit, dog pile on the wahbit."
Not "Dog pile on Dexter, dog pile on Dexter"
Doesn't anybody watch Bugs Bunny anymore???!?!?!??!

And here's a bonus bit from LOTR I, just to water your mouth some
more:

> Announcement from Iron_Hills, (#20) dated Tue Feb 5 16:20:31 2002
WooHoo, de industrious dwarves of Iron_Hills break
first, see no sign of de lazybones pointy ears or
smelly orcs. Pretty lonely here at de moment -
de sheep hiding nervously around de corners of de
trees. We thank de even more industrious Winace
wizards, fixing de software of eldritch power.
Dunno why we wanna research anyway, unless
research sharper axe blades or stinky-less orcs...
