Empire Academy Needs YOU!
From Geoff Cashman (Mithrilien)
Empire Academy is a forthcoming resource for players of all experience
levels. There will be a large number of articles on every conceivable topic regarding this wonderful game, from beginning concepts to the most detailed tactics and strategies. We need help! We can't write all the articles alone.
How can you contribute? Easy. Pick a topic...any topic!... about Empire and write an article on it. A given article doesn't need to be an expert dissertation on every detail you can possibly imagine regarding the topic at hand. Just write! If several people contribute articles on the same subject, we'll post them all. We won't be taking only "the best" article on a given topic. We'll be taking them all. An example article may be found here:
http://www.wolfpackempire.com/academy/demo.html
So, pick a topic, write a few paragraphs (or more if you like...length is not an issue!) and send it to the Empire Academy at:
You will be given credit for the article on the Academy web site. We'll even help you write the article if you like. Write as much as you can, and we'll help you finish it.
WinACE 2.2.12 is out! Looks like a bug fix release. Get it from the
usual place.
Here's yet another way to play Empire behind restrictive firewalls,
reported by Thomas Lullier (Chtom). You `socksify' WinACE with
SocksCapV2 to make it go through HTTPort. HTTPort encapsulates the
traffic in HTTP and relays to HTTHost running on some machine with
real Internet access. HTTHost unencapsulates and relays to the Empire
server.Get SocksCapV2 from http://www.socks.permeo.com/, and HTTHost/HTTPort from http://www.htthost.com/.
If you get nailed for playing Empire where you shouldn't, don't blame
Thomas or the Empire News.

No new long term games have been brought to the attention of the
Empire News. Please contact us if you want your game listed here!
PANGAEA: deitied by <anonymous>, is running at 66.69.41.175, port 6665. The map is large, I mean Large, like, you know, LARGE... 512x256, 150 sector start islands, plus a continent reckoned at 1e4 sectors.
The deity is playing. This led to a bit of discussion on rec.games.empire. Some people refuse to play when the deity plays as well. Therefore, it's very important to make the fact known to prospective players before they sign up. Which the deity did.
Mid-Shipman's Empire: deitied by Mark Ballinger, is running at mid.wolfpackempire.com, port 6789. It is a game for non-newbies who
are also not vastly experienced. The last update reportedly saw five full-scale invasions, and three capitals fell. DexterPV/Thistle/Pax/Armengar declared victory just a few hours ago.
Newbie III: Lanny Andelin is continuing his series of games designed for newer/less experienced players. Newbie III is running at 208.187.205.245, port 5000. Countries just started to experiment with those newfangled aeroplanes.
The Changeling Blitz: is running at blitz.wolfpackempire.com, port
6789. This blitz resets at 7:00pm US/Eastern (currently 23:00 UTC)
every day. Updates are enabled at 7:30pm. There is a 60 ETU update
every 10 minutes. Note that world size and some options change daily.
It is up to players to figure that out each day, but typing "version"
helps.
The Zebra Blitz: is running at blitz.wolfpackempire.com, port 5678.
This blitz resets at 6:00pm US/Eastern (currently 22:00 UTC) every
Sunday. Updates are enabled at 6:30pm. There is a 48 ETU update
every hour on the hour.
There are no new victories to report, just some additional news on
Newbie II, won by Pax and Armengar, which didn't make it into the last

Shire got nods for stubborn defense despite a late start and relative inexperience, and Greatland
a.k.a. People's for holding his own after his ally had to leave the
game prematurely. Irons earned boos for dropping out of the second

'Come out quick, you gotta watch this!'
'Uh, what's the matter?'
'That enterprising grasshopper there just called Ionica a nobody, an old fart living on past reputation, too scared to play.'
'Wohoo! You get the chairs out, I'll get the cooler with the beer!'
Oh, the fun of watching a skillfully applied flame-thrower!
Remember Newton's admission: 'If I have seen further it is by standing
on the shoulders of giants.'Ignorance stumbles over the feet of giants. Uncritical veneration prostrates itself at their feet. Neither will get anything done. It takes the iconoclastic scholar (or is it the scholarly iconoclast?) to make progress. That's always a messy process, which likely involves some stumbling around oversized feet, some falling off hips and landing flat on the face. Three cheers to the bustling climbers, and three cheers to the giants!

Che attempt to liberate a sector only if they outnumber your military.
A sector can hold no more than 255 che, so 255 military are always
safe. But that's excessive. Here's a trick to estimate the number of
che. Do a census immediately after taking a sector. The population
will be somewhat lower than before the attack. The difference is an
upper bound for che. So, if you count 957 civilians in your newly
taken sector, you just created up to 43 che. Garrison with some 50
military, and you should be safe.Keep in mind that every time you take the sector, more civilians join
the resistance, and that the terrorists move around at the update.
