Renaissance I

This game was run by Yannick Tremblay (Bleuet).

The winners of this game were Jolt (Ionica, Mithrilien) and RedGreen (Overlord, Blighty)

"Well, the game is over. Congratulation to Jolt and RedGreen for the win. Great authoritative play by both of them especially Jolt who dominated the game nearly since the beginning.

The first particularity of this game was it's setting. The world was made of thirty-five 50 sectors islands, (pretty boring up to now) but instead of having each countries on one start island, each country would start on two different islands. On each of their two islands, they would have a standard setting of two sanctuary sectors but no units. Instead, I gave everyone 40 lcm and 20 hcm per islands so they would be able to build immediately and start waging heavy war. The two countries on each islands were separated by one or two row of deity mils. Finally, I used a little optimisation hack to distribute the countries around the map so that their two islands would be as far as possible and their neighbours (sharing the islands and next islands) would be as diverse as possible. This last point was to create many diverse front and make it difficult for two allies to neighbour each others at both of their "colonies".

This setting as expected created very heavy fighting right at the start, all the ambitious countries aiming to get control of both their starting islands as soon as possible. The "gift" of lcm and hcm allowed countries to build up to eight land units at the second update but it could be a poisoned one if one didn't manage to win fast enough. wherl (later to become Scythia), Jolt and Plundaria were the first ones to clear both their islands, their good play combined with the luck of getting easy opponent on both islands paying. For the others, the lucky one were the one that managed to clear at least one of their islands so that they could concentrate on one fight seeing how fast their treasury was going down. Being stuck in two long fight was very rough on the budget. Even the eventual second, RedGreen, could almost have fallen fighting Gubble and Calvin&Hobbs until he made peace with Calvin (maybe had they also realised that they actually knew each others and were just playing incognito). This allow RedGreen to finish Gubble while Calvin&Hobbs fought Holsation who sold his skin dearly, Calvin never recuperating to be in the game. I also believe this long fight was one of the main reason RedGreen was never in reach of Jolt for the yellow jersey although he did superbly to take the second place.

In the mean time, a couple of more peaceful countries started to make tech early and took this gave them the early yellow jerseys Holsation and Luzer had such a start. It could have been a good strategy had they exploited their early tech lead for future conquest but Holsation never had the chance and Luzer took too long to decide to attack GroundZero (a total newbie) and then lacked the skill/courage to take the fight abroad. It must be said for Luzer that it was only his second game.

So the beggining of the game was not short of action, some countries clearing both their islands, but sight that pleased me a lot, some countries while being killed on an island, managed to win on their second island. It leads me to believe that the idea of a double start like this one was successful and it seemed appreciated by the players.

Back to the action, Plundaria and Jolt had switched to a production economy which gave Plundaria the yellow jersey for a few days soon to be taken over by Jolt who would never loose it afterward. RedGreen and Plundaria were first to invade another island choosing an easy target. But they were soon to be followed by Jolt who chose to invade Barsoom while he was still stuck fighting Meridian and Pantang on his start islands. At that moment, the actual i.d. of Jolt was still unknown but it was suspected that the attack wasn't only to gain territory on a weakened Barsoom but that some other less noble motive were involve... maybe something to do with Thematic I... Barsoom, stopping any unneeded production managed to hold for a while, killing Meridian and even PanTang in the process. But there's only so much one can do against a powerhouse that drop 10-20 units per update on your island and don't even care about them. Having to go away, Barsoom first resorted to leaving his country to his pet cat and then to a semi intelligent program than Mithrillien calls 'bots'... In doing so, he managed to start another of these fantastic and very mature discussion in the anno's about the nature of life, the empire and all the rest including (or should I say: particularly) if 'bots' should be allowed to play. At the end, Jolt finally cleared the island after a long stand by Barsoom (with any mean he could). This long fight could have been costly to Jolt had other countries used that delay to catch up with him, but they didn't partly due to their own hesitation to exploit the opening and partly du to his good play. (he never slacked tech production and even manage to build an invasion force to take on a less vigorous opponent during that time)

Jolt and RedGreen then number 1 and 2 had declared alliance and it was obvious that they were the main (if not the only) threat. The second most powerful force was formed by Plundaria and Alphanemoon, wherl was doing fine economically but wasn't as active and was soon to be replaced by Scythia. Tallistan slowly assumed his position as a potential power too by taking out Orcdorkland without much trouble. However, Jolt was still gaining power far faster than anybody else. If they wanted to stop him, they had to do something very soon. Barsoom, in the background, was trying to rally as many peoples as possible in a united sheep against wolf faction but a lot of the sheep seemed happy to play their role of sheep and wait to be eaten one by one. This I must say is a thing I don't understand in empire. Why so many countries don't dare to fight ? Finally, Plundaria, Alphanemoon and Tallistan agreed to attack (and maybe some others) but, while making their preparation and being overly careful to be totally ready, Jolt attacked Tallistan and luckily found his invasion force sitting pretty, waiting to be destroyed. The lost of one island and a huge part of his force was a severe moral blow for Tallistan and probably for the rest of the field too. Jolt and RedGreen wanted to stop the game then before the Christmas break but most peoples agreed that they still hadn't won. However, back from the break, they launch an attack on Plundaria. Then some more... The alliance finally made an attack on RedGreen and did some damage on one or two of his islands but nothing major. Maybe they could have gain an island or even two but Jolt and RedGreen were growing faster on other fronts. So with Plundaria having real life time trouble and the rest of the alliance feeling that there was nothing they could helped with the insistence of the eventual winners who didn't want to wait 10 updates to nuke everybody before packing the game, the world submitted to the domination of Jolt and RedGreen.
